2024 EAST COUNTY PREP SOFTBALL

SPRING VALLEY – Steele Canyon at the plate did damage in just about every inning but one as they came away with a 7-1 victory over Hilltop in a Hilltop tournament pool play contest.
Sophomore Marina Gonzalez would drive in the first run to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Steele Canyon would add to their lead in the bottom of the second inning courtesy of RBI doubles by Isabella Azevedo and Hailey Trujillo to make it 3-0.
Not only would Bailey Evans pick up the win for the Cougars as she allowed 1 run on 9 hits while walking 2 and striking out 3, she would belt a solo home run over the left field fence in the sixth inning.
Steele Canyon offensively tallied 11 hits including Lauren Becker leading as she went 3-for-4. Kayala Hopkins would also have a nice day at the plate as she doubled twice in her 2-for-3 day along with scoring a run.
Steele Canyon moves to 3-3-1 and will next take on Southwest El Centro on Saturday at 11:30 am.
MISSION HILLS 7, EL CAPITAN 3 – Despite the big day at the plate for El Capitan’s Kylee Frazier who tallied three hits in the contest the Mission Hills Grizzlies used a four-run fourth inning to break the tie and put the game away.
Frazier singled in the second singled in the fourth, and singled in the sixth inning for the Vaqueros.
Mission Hills would take an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single and RBI double.
El Capitan in the top of the second inning pulled within a run when Frazier who had singled in the inning would steal third base and come into score on an error by the Grizzlies catcher to make it 2-1.
A couple of innings later in the top of the fourth inning, the Vaqueros would tie the score when Freshman Sofia Simone with two outs singled that allowed Alyssa Fierro to race home.
Later in the top of the sixth inning, Ciara Berardini would score on a ground ball out by Aubrey Thorne to make it 7-3.
Shelby Vars took the loss for the Vaqueros. She would allow 7 runs on 9 hits while walking 2 and striking out 5.
Alanna Christiaens would also contribute offensively as she doubled.
El Capitan falls to 2-4-3 and will next play on Saturday against Bonita Vista in te Hilltop tournament.
