Monarchs team up to get OT win at Santana

SANTEE (1-27-16) — The Monte Vista Monarchs pulled off a couple of basketball rarities as they knocked off Santana 71-65 in overtime in Tuesday’s (Jan. 26) contest to earn a share of the Grossmont Valley League lead.
All five Monte Vista starters reached double scoring digits, and three of them hit double-doubles.
Mr. BO RANKINS poured in 21 points and bagged 11 rebounds, SHAI STEVENSON added 13 points and 10 boards to go along with 5 assists and 7 steals, while DEONDRE McHAYLE knocked down 11 points and collected 13 rebounds.
The Monarchs made it like they were going to turn the game into a runaway as they stormed to a 23-11 first quarter lead. By the end of regulation, however, Santana had tied matters at 57-57.
Stevenson led Monte Vista’s charge in overtime with 7 points.
“Stevenson was really active tonight,” Monte Vista coach MIKE TULLY observed. “His defensive activity really paid off in overtime.”
The victory permitted Monte Vista to share the GVL lead with Granite Hills and El Cajon Valley at 2-1.
Santana fell one game back at 1-2 despite 15 points and 7 rebounds by TRENT BAUGH.
ANTHONY ROMERO chipped in with 14 points and 9 rebounds, while TAYLOR RIVERS pitched in with 10 points and 6 rebounds.
