New-look Coyotes host Cuyamaca event

EL CAJON — Cuyamaca College will learn this weekend if the men’s basketball is taking to a turn for the positive when the Coyotes host their annual tournament this weekend.
Starting on Friday (Nov. 10), Cuyamaca (1-1 overall) will test its fast start by meeting Mt. San Jacinto College at 5 p.m. in one of two contests. The finale and third place games are Saturday (Nov. 11).
The Coyotes opened the season at the 15th annual Clashat Canyons tournament, first defeating Oxnard, 74-49, before falling to host College of the Canyons, a perennial postseason participate, 74-70, in the title game.
It’s a giant switch for Cuyamaca, which has posted just winning season (just 13-12 in 2009-10)over the past 15 season, when they went 19-12 in 2006-07.
Despite the setback to the Cougars, Cuyamaca posted several solid individual performances.
Sophomore guard Xavier Rubio (Eastlake) paced both sides with a game-0best 28 points, also collecting six steals and six assists.
Also reaching double-figures scoring for Cuyamaca was Patrick Brinkman (13 points on 6-for-8 shooting) and Jonathan Duley (10). Both are also sophomores.
