LA MESA (1-18-16) — Known for his scrambling ability and throwing on the run, Helix quarterback MICHAEL AUSTIN has garnered a football scholarship to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
Self-named “The Golden Boii,” Austin completed 1755 yards on 183 passes for 18 touchdowns as a senior for the Highlanders.
Now sporting the Cal Poly Mustangs’ green and copper gold uniform, Austin rushed for 78 carries for 391 yards and 8 touchdowns in his senior season at Helix while earning first team honors across the board – All East County, All-Grossmont Hills and All-CIF.
The combination of Austin and St. Augustine’s running back Elijah Preston should be a fail-safe rushing combination for the Mustangs, as Preston rushed for a section second-best all-time 6,614 yards for his career, as he earned the prestigious Silver Pigskin award in 2015 from local television station KUSI’s Prep Pigskin Report.
At one time Austin was considering accepting a ride to the Naval Academy among others.
Notable: Helix’s EZEKIEL NOA has received a scholarship off from Washington State University.
Highlanders’ defensive lineman MASON VINYARD has already accepted a scholarship ride to the Cougars of Pullman, Washington.
