EL CAJON (1-16-16) — The Granite Hills Eagles opened the Grossmont Valley League season with a smothering 78-39 rout of visiting Monte Vista on Friday (Jan. 15).
Granite Hills (8-8, 1-0 GVL) used a blistering charge with 48 points in the middle two quarters to put the game away.
“We played real well as a team, did a nice job against the press,” said Eagles coach RANDY ANDERSON. “We moved the ball well offensively and passed the ball well, which resulted in our getting lots of assists.
“Our defensive intensity has been pretty steady the past couple of weeks,” Anderson added. “JORDEN ROGERS did a nice job coming off the bench, provided a good spark.”
Ten Eagles scored during the onslaught with DAVID SETTERBERG setting the pace with 18 points, while CAMERON SPITZER added 13 and Rogers chipped in with11.
As a team the Eagles scored 11 treys and were 18 of 22 from the free throw line.
RYAN KELLY scored 9 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, dished 5 assists, made 2 steals and recorded 2 blocks.
TRE OWENS led the Monarchs with 12 points in an otherwise dismal outing for Monte Vista.

HELIX 63, OLYMPIAN 33 – Helix buzzed past Olympian in Friday’s (Jan. 15) non-league encounter in La Mesa.
CARSON BAKER set the pace for the Highlanders by hitting 7 of 12 shots from the floor, snagged 8 rebounds, dished an assist, recorded 3 steals and blocked a shot, finishing with 15 points.
Helix blazed to an 18-5 first quarter lead and extended the advantage to 56-19 after three quarters.

KEARNY 76, CHRISTIAN 54 – In Christian’s battle for the Central League lead, the Patriots came up short against Top 10 foe Kearny in Friday night’s (Jan. 15) action.
KYLE STOWERS, who has been blazing hot of late, poured in 24 points, hitting 6 of 6 shots from the floor including a trio of treys and 3 of 6 free throws. The Patriots point guard also collected 4 rebounds and dished 2 assists.
TRAVIS BALLARD was his usual steady self with 18 points and 6 rebounds.
The remainder of the Patriots produced only 10 points as Kearny used a 20-6 scoring burst to turn the game in its favor.
“You know, one thing about Stowers is he keeps playing hard, and this was one of his best games this year,” said Patriots assistant coach TIM BROWN.
