The Grossmont Valley League wrap for Wednesday (Apr. 12):
Monte Vista 3, at West Hills 1
SANTEE – Monte Vista junior pitcher Gavin Daley fired a complete-game 4-hitter without allowing an earned run, as the monarchs tallied three early runs to register a mild upset over West Hills, 3-1, in Wednesday’s (Apr. 12) GVL ballgame at Wolf Pack Park.
Daley struck out a career-best 12 Wolf Pack batters against just two walks, sailing to his second victory of the season — his first since an opening week win against Mater Dei Catholic.
Meanwhile, West Hills pitcher Raeden Stevenson was tagged for just one earned run in his fve innings, but it proved to be the difference. He struck out four Monarchs and allowed just five hits.
The Monarchs aw every other batter do damage inthe first inning.
Caleb Taa-Jones accepted a lead off, shortstop Tyler Lemen stroked a one-out single, then right fielder Jacob Schweizer delivered a clutch two-out single. However even though Taa-Hones was running on contact with two down Schweizer was not awarded an RBI due to a misplay of the ball in the outfield.
An inning later, Taa-Jones recorded an RBI single, then another error increased the margin 3-0.
The lone West Hills run came in the third on strange plays involving T.K. Madera
Following Madera’s one-out single, Monte Vista attempted to get him out at second base in a double play attempt, but he was safe while the batter was out at first. Again, the ball went behind the Madera to second base, but Madera was somehow safe at third base. A few pitches later, he swcored on a dropped third strike (passed ball).
he Monte Vista (9-7 overall, 1-1 GVL) has now won three straight and 5-of-5, standing, in second place and just one game behind front-running Valhalla
West Hills (6-7-1, 0-2 GVL) are suddenly slumping, going 1-4 after a 3-1-1 streak.
Valhalla 21, Mount Miguel 0
RANCHO SAN DIEGO – A trio of Valhalla pitchers combined on a 1-hitter, as the Norsemen stopped Mount Miguel, 21-0, in GVL action on Wednesday (Apr. 12). The contest was called in the bottom of the sixth inning when the visiting club ran out of pitching.
For Valhalla (10-4 overall, 2-0 GVL), the 21 runs were the most the Norsemen have scored (not counting GVL opponents) since whipping Scripps Ranch, 21-11, on Apr. 5, 2012, in a Lions Tournament contest.
Mount Miguel(5-9, 0-2 21-GVL) has dropped six straight following a fast 5-3 start.
