Now that we have the attention of all grandparents out there, gender equity — especially when it comes to the CIF girls basketball playoffs — may not be all it cracks up to be.
Following a disastrous showing by East County boys basketball teams in Tuesday’s section openers, the girls did little better in their round-of-16 contests on Wednesday (Feb.15).
Among the few winners from Grossmont Conference schools came in Division III, where four schools were all placed in the identical bracket, but there will be no re-matches in either quadrant after locals went 1-1 in their section of the draw.
Those schools were Steele Canyon and Granite Hills.
he third-seeded Cougars took a not-so-asy 41-28 decision over Chula Vista. However, Steele Canyon will not get to meet West Hills after the Wolf Pack dropped a road decision in Calexico, 48-28.
Steele Canyon only led by a single points through two quarters before a 10-4 margin in the fourth period allowed the Cougars to pull away from the Spartans.
Meanwhile, the second-seeded Eagles whipped Brawley, 50-31. Granite Hills necy meet 10th-seed Point Loma, which upset host El Cajon Valley, 46-21.
The only other winner from Grossmont District programs came in Division V, as Valhalla dropped a 51-17 whipping of a school known as “SET” — the Lions of the School for Entrepreneurship & Technology in San Diego.
In other words, Orange Nation better had won — yet they did, as the top-seeded Norsemen will host one of the county’s four High Tech High locations, the Thunder from High Tech-Mesa in Clairemont.
At least Valhalla received a home-game berth in both rounds as both SE&T and HTH-Mesa were go-champions in the Pioneer League, but Mesa was awarded the home contest.
Elsewhere
Among local entrants in the higher divisions Christian failed to report its score at Carlsbad — don’t worry, neither did the fourth-seeded Lancers in Division I action.
Division II saw No. 8 Helix fall to homer to Olympian, 62-35, inn a pairing which drew complaints from coaches county-wide regarding the formula used by MaxPreps to determine playoff positions.
Olympian has been ranked most f the season, with many believing the Eagles deserved a home game against a lesser opponent; next season, the San Diego Section noted they will return to the old CIF Power Index formula. Sorry, folks, too late for the Scotties.
Meanwhile in D-2, No. 7 Our Lady of Peace easily corralled visiting El Capitan, 62-39.
In Division IV, there was another local winner. Patrick Henry, the sixth seed, toppled Horizon Prep of Rancho Santa fe,67-22. The Patriots advance into the quarterfinals with a date on the road with Vincent Memorial of Calexico; the Scots easily dropped Escondido, 57-33.
