EL CAJON – Highlights (as reported from school coaches)on boys and girls basketball games played on Mon.-Tue., Feb. 6-87:

Girls

Mount Miguel 80, Monte Vista 33
SPRING VALLEY – In a contest plated Monday (Feb. 6) to accommodate Mount Miguel’s non-league schedule later in the week to close the regular season, Las Matadores took a wire-to-wire decision over the visiting Monarchs to extend their series streak to 40 straight.

Mount Miguel raced to an 11-0 lead before Monte Vista junior Helan Ali hit the first of her three 3-point goals — one from each corner, and a third from just left of the top of the key.

However, several runs by the Matadors kept Monte Vista at bay, including a 15-1 string to close the ballgame.

The triumph comes on the heels of Matadors head coach Robbie Sandoval capturing his — and the school’s — 23rd consecutive league championship after downing El Capitan last Friday.

Mount Miguel (19-6 overall) complete preparations for the postseason with three games over three days to close the week: hosting Poway (Wed., 6 p.m.), host Mater Dei Catholic (Thurs., 6:30 p.m.), then at second-place Helix in an attempt to cinch a perfect record in Grossmont Hills League action in a 5:30 p.m. start on Friday.

Granite Hills 42, West Hills 28
EL CAJON – Granite Hills clinched the Grossmont Valley League crown by pasting t visiting West Hills, 42-28, on Tuesday (Fe. 7).

It’s been a massive turnaround the Eagles (22-5 overall), which went a mere 2-21 one graduating class ago in 2018-19. This is also the school’s first 20-win campaign since Jerry Parked coached the program to the CIF-San Diego Section Division I crown over Rancho Buena Vista, 55-44, in 2012-13 — the 2011-12 ballclub won a school-record 30 games.

Unfortunately, the current coaching staff does not make game reports to East County Sports.

SANTEE – For a team winning its 21st game of the season, West Hills looks anything but ready or the CIF payoffs, barely keeping its mathematical hopes for a league title alive by nipping visiting Mount Miguel on Senior Night at Dave Hunter Gymnasium.

Mount Miguel utilized a 10-0 run in the middle of the first haf to tamke a 9-point lead, only to the Wolf Pack answer with a 13-2 run to grab a 1-point halftime lead.

In the second half, the contest was again tied at 50-all when the rebounding advantage of the Pack made the difference; the Pack grabbed more offensive boards than the Matadors recorded defensively.

With 3:18 remaining, a steal for a breakaway slam dunk gave West Hills the lead for keeps, yet the Matadors kept fighting back.

A few possessions, Vince Hillman converted a rebound — the Pack’s fifth of thee sequence — for 56-51 lead with 1:54 remaining.

Mount Miguel guard Thaddeus Boudreaux, who was able to penetrate all contest, then found himself stuck in a triple-team under the basket. So her fed the ball to a wide open Hamad Elhamad for a 15-footer to trim the deficit to three with 1:26 left.

However, West Hills made just enough foul shots in the end to escape.

“Despite all of the distractions of Senior Night, we pulled through,” said West Hills head coach Tim Barry. “We overcame out shooting woes and missed free throws.”

“Still I’m proud of boys for overcoming everything.”

Hillman led West Hills (21-4 overall, 6-2 GVL) with 16 points. Zeid Salem added 14, while Theron Humphries had 13.

Mount Miguel (8-16, 4-3 GVL) saw Vincent Jones led all scorers with 18 points, while Boudreaux posted 13, and Isiah Thomas added 9,

Doe the Pack, they finish the regular season with a perfect 10-0 mark at home, Exit 13 a most difficult off-ramp for visiting teams, especially after dropping their last four at home last season.

EL CAJON – For “Kaos” to be created in the Grossmont Valley League, all El Capitan needs to do if they want to capture a 20th victory this season is to defeat first-place Steele Canyon on the final day of the regular season this Friday.

El Cajon Valley received 13 points from junior Jahsir Bosley, and 12 more from senior Khy’rece Kennedy, El Capitan failed to report.

Granite Hills 70, Monte Vista 69 (OT)

SPRING VALLEY – In the teams’ first meeting in Grossmont Hills League play, Mote Vista won in overtime at Granite Hills. This go-around, it was the Eagles’ turn to do the same on the road. No game report from either program.

Helix 63, Valhalla 61

RANCHO SAN DIEGO – The Valhalla Norsemen, which fell to Helix by 22 points in the first meeting, just missed in the re-match in falling to the visiting Helix. No game report from either program.

Santana at Steele Canyon – No Report, bot even the final score — really?

Liberty Charter 42, Horizon Prep 39

ALPINE – In this Patriot League battle between schools both known as the Lions, Liverty Charter broke through to win a contest tied at 33-all after three periods to win at Joan MacQueen Middle School. No game report from either program.
