LINDA VISTA — Inside or out, Grossmont College spiker Madi Bogle knows what volleyball is all about.
One day following her acceptance of am NCAA Division I beach volleyball scholarship to Grand Canyon University of the Western Athletic Conference, Bogle paced the 6th-ranked Grossmont College indoor team to a thrilling 5-set triumph over No. 7 San Diego Mesa in what could be the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference match of the year.
When the sides met last month at Grossmont, the Griffins swept the Olympians in three sets, as Mesa dropped from the No. 4 spot in the state poll.
Now with Grossmont one slot ahead of the Olympians, Bogle & Co. proved worthy of their position by overcoming an early one-set deficit to win, 22-25, 26-24, 25-14, 20-25, 15-13.
With the victory, Grossmont (17-3 overall, 12-0 PCAC) all-but-mathematically clinched its ninth conference championship over the last 10 full seasons.
The Griffins have now captured 15 consecutive matches.
Mesa (19-3, 10-2) remains in second place but barely, leading MiraCosta by a half-game. The Spartans swept San Diego City on Wednesday (Nov. 2).
Bogle File
A product of Eastlake High, Bogle, and her partner Lexi Morris, reached the semifinals of last season’s CCCAA state championship in beach pairs, losing only to eventual state champions from Santa Barbara City College.
This season Bogle is hitting .344 on nearly 500 attacks this season, ranking her 15th in the state in hitting percentage. In addition, she has 15 aces, 200 digs and 16 blocks.
Grand Canyon reached the NCAA Division I Beach Volleyball Championships in Gulf Shores, Ala., last season.
The Antelopes were the number seven seed in the tournament. GCU head coach Kristen Rohr was named AVCA National Coach of the Year.
As an AVP Pro Beach player, she reached a nigh of fifth in the world rankins in pairs, and No. 1 in NVL team beach competition.
Last month, the ‘Lopes accepted an invitation to join the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA). The newly formed conference will host Florida State, LSU, Missouri State, South Carolina, TCU and GCU. The members of the conference have finished in the top two in half of the years of the championships (six).
