EL CAJON (12-26-15) — All-Star games can be considered to be a crapshoot as there typically isn’t much defense and a lot of offense which excites the fans, and rarely a clear favorite.
There was no exception again as the fans who attended the fourth annual Jersey Mike’s Bowl sponsored by San Diego Friday Night Lights were treated to an entertaining contest at Valley Stadium on the campus of Granite Hills as the Blue Starz won 42-21 over the Red Starz.
It would be the Red team striking first as Casey Brown of La Jolla High found KHALEED DAVIS of Grossmont for a 35-yard TD strike and with the extra point gave the Red team an early 7-0 lead. In fact it would be the only score of the quarter.
The second quarter would be all Blue team as they dominated with 21 unanswered points thanks to three scoring runs to lead 21-7 at the break.
The Red team in the second half were able to tie the game in the fourth quarter at 21-21 thanks to touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters. NICK SEXTON (8-77, TD) caught the tying score of 3-yards from Brown.
However the Blue team was able to recapture the lead as they dominated on the defensive end and also a nifty jumping 85-yard catch by Rashid Shaheed of Mt. Carmel from Valhalla slinger PHILLIP NASEH (9-17, 166 yards and 2 TDs) who was able to loft it up and Shaheed timed it perfectly to make the long score. This put the Blue team ahead 28-21. The other gunslinger for the blue team was SPENCER MOYER (5-11-1, 92 yards and a TD) of West Hills who tossed the final score of the day.
Overall it was an outstanding day for East County athletes as they all shined when they were in the contest. In fact the Most Valuable player for the Red Squad was Sexton (8-77-TD) of Christian High, while the Most Valuable player on the Blue Squad was Shaheed of Mt. Carmel who on the day had 4 catches for 163 yards and 3 TDs.
The victory keeps the winning streak alive for the Blue squad as they now push the record at 4-0.
