Another historic win for Braves

EL CAJON — It’s been a full quarter-century since El Cajon Valley put on a display like this.
In recording their largest margin-of-victory in league play since 1997, the Braves set another high-water mark with this 2022 club in a 37-8 pasting of Monte Vista at ECVHS Stadium.
Not only did Friday’s (Sept. 23) triumph snap a 6-game losing streak in league play, but just about a year after ECVHS snapped a years-long league losing skid by defeating the Monarchs, 41-22, the Braves’ 28-point victory was the school’s largest in league play in the 21st Century.
The previous best dates back to 1997 with a five-touchdown decision over Grossmont (49-14) and Santana (38-15).
Senior running back Daelin Richardson ran for a touchdown just nine seconds in to give the Braves an early lead.
Later, the Braves’ junior quarterback, Darick Dubose, threw a short touchdown pass to junior receiver Paris Dixon and ECVHS was out to a 14-0 lead midway through the first period.
Monte Vista came back in the second quarter thanks to a pass from junior quarterback Adrian Gonzalez to receiver Jason Triplett.
The two-point attempt by the Monarchs was successful, but the Braves scored on their next possession with another connection from Dubose to Dixon. Dubose had just three completions in the contest.
Dubose and Dixon also combined for 21 tackles on defense, including a sack by Dubose.
The Braves countered the two-point conversion with one of their own, as Chris Cosio was credited with the points and the Braves led at the half, 22-8.
Dubose added a 65-yard touchdown run down the left side in the third quarter to make it 29-8 in favor of El Cajon Valley.
After an interception by Cosio gave the ball back to the Braves in the fourth, senior running back Kal-el Gordon rushed in for the long score.
Gordon, the Braves’ leading rusher, didn’t play in the first half, and was seen on the sidelines with his helmet off.
The Braves host Valhalla next week for their Homecoming game, while the Monarchs host Mount Miguel.
