CASA DE ORO — Shawn Chaffin, the women’s basketball coach for San Diego Christian College over the past five seasons, surprised Hawks officials on the eve of the new school year by announcing his resignation on Monday (Aug. 15).
Chaffin will take the same position at Waldorf University (Iowa) of the North Star Athletic Association.
We are thankful for Shawn’s leadership in the women’s basketball program over the last five seasons and his investment into the development of our athletic programs,” said Brian Schroeder, the SDCC athletics director. “He has served well and we will miss him but are excited for his next opportunity back home in the Midwest.”
“The Hawks are better positioned for our future because of his diligence and efforts.”
Walford will be Chaffin’s third career head coaching assignment. His initial head post position came at University of Great Falls (now University of Providence) in Montana from 2006-10.
In all, Chaffin owns 21 years of college women’s basketball coaching experience, with most of success coming as an assistant, including five NAIA National Tournament appearances for Montana-Western. However, he has never posted a winning full season as a head coach for the UGF Argos ore the SDCC Hawks.
Last season was his best for SDCC at 9-19 overall following a 7-6 record in the COVID-19 shortened 2020-21 campaign.
Chaffin’s overall record with the Hawks was 38-93 (.290) overall and 14-62 (.185) in Golden State Athletic Conference action.
At Waldorf, Chaffin takes ober a Warriors ballclub which went just 9-19 last season (last in NSAA play at 2-12).
Schroeder expects to name a replacement this week. The obvious leading candidate in Anessa Wolfblack, a former San Diego Christian standout who assisted Chaffin over all of his five seasons.
