Tigers deny late Christian rally

SKYLINE (4-28-22) – Early runs scored by the Morse Tigers (8-13, 2-4 CL) were too much for the Christian Patriots (15-10, 4-2 CL) to try and recover from as they dropped a 9-6 decision on Thursday afternoon in City League action.

An RBI single by Melody Wheatly followed by a couple of batters later a two-run single by Davina Pauu that scored both Shanessy Cardwell and Wheatly would give the Tigers a 3-0 lead. They would tack on another pair of runs courtesy of a two-run single by Salvador Beyah which would extend the lead to 5-0.

The Patriots would answer with a run in the top of the second inning when Hannah Mroz drove in Ashley Wood to make it 5-1 and later Lucy Sherburne would draw a walk that would allow Giselle Colmenero to trot home to make it 5-2.

Morse would add another run in the bottom of the inning when Ju’Mila Dunn decided to take off from third base and successfully steal home to make give them a 6-2 lead.

Rachel Stephens of the Patriots would belt a solo home run over the left-field fence in the top of the third inning to cut the deficit in half 6-3.

However, the Tigers would push across another pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend their lead even further to 8-3. The first run would come courtesy of a Cardwell double to center field that would allow Dunn to race around from second base and score and later Cardwell would score.

Trailing 9-3 in the top of the seventh the Patriots knew they had to get something going and Kaitlyn Moody would start the rally as she doubled in both Kate Manes and Stephens to make it 9-5. Later in the inning, Payton Grosset would knock in Chloe Hessom to pull the Patriots within 9-6 but that would be the closest they would come as the next two batters would be retired to end the game.
