Ramuno just misses perfecto on Santana

LA MESA — Helix Highlanders pitcher Sophia Ramuno fanned the first six batters of the game, while the bats of the Scotties kicked back into gear, slamming the door on visiting Santana, 5-0, in Thursday’s (Apr. 28) Grossmont Hills League shutout.
Ramuno, a senior, finished one batter short of a perfect game in her 1-hitter shutout. She also blanked Santana by an identical 5-0 count in a 2-hitter on Apr. 13.
Ramuno finished with 14 strikeouts, earning her seventh complete-game shutout on the season. It was a nice bounce-back from an extra-innings loss earlier in the week.
The Highlanders’ offense started early.
In the first, Helix leadoff batter Kori Jonilonis drew a walk and later came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Amber Young.
In the third, Helix added on thanks to an RBI single by Ramuno and a run-scoring ground out from Danika Munoz.
In the fourth, base hits by Ivy Greene and Jonilonis set things up for another run. Courtesy runner Jadalyn Tedtaotao raced home on an outfield error and Jonilonis waltzed home thanks to a bases-loaded walk issued to Young.
Santana’s Hailey Phillips collected the lone baserunner for the Sultans, reaching with a single in the third.
Aurelia Dawson was tagged with the loss, giving up four runs and six hits before being lifted for Ashtyn Niemiec, who allowed three hits and one unearned run across 2.2 innings of relief.
Helix moved to 17-6 overall, and 5-1 in GHL action to stay within a game behind front-running El Capitan. Meanwhile, Santana (10-12) missed its opportunity to get back to the .500 plateau, falling into fourth place at 2-4 behind Steele Canyon.
