Patriots make short work of Centurions

UNIVERSITY CITY (4-22-22) – On Friday afternoon the bats for the visiting Patrick Henry Patriots (6-9-1, 2-1 CWL) pounded out 13 hits en route to their convincing 14-2 victory over the University City Centurions (4-13-1, 2-1 CWL) in five innings in City Western League action.

The Patriots started their scoring in the top of the first courtesy of a two-out two-run home run by Olivia Gigante (2-3, 3 R, 3 RBI, HR) that plated Savannah Sutton 1-4, R) to make it 2-0, after a double by McKenna Gieger (3-3, 2 R, RBI, 2B) the following batter Leila Ludwig (1-2, R, 2 RBI, 2B) would reach on an error that allowed Gieger to come into score and a couple of batters later Jenel Mallari (2-4, R, 3 RBI) would drive in both Ludwig and Maura Evans to round out the scoring.

An RBI single by Gigante that brought home Kaiah Altmeyer (2 R) followed by an RBI single by Gieger that scored Malia Savage (2-3, R, 3 RBI, 2B) would make it 7-0. The Patriots would add another run on a sacrifice fly by Ludwig that allowed Gigante to tag up and score.

Not wanting to be shut out on the scoreboard the Centurions managed to push across a couple of runs in the bottom of the third to make it 8-2.

However, the Patriots would take the momentum right back in the top of the fourth inning as Brooke Taylor scored on a wild pitch, Mallari would drive in Gieger and later with two outs Savage would double to center field scoring both Evans and Mallari to give them a 13-2 lead.

An RBI double by Ludwig in the top of the fifth inning would round things out scoring-wise for the Patriots.

Despite a hit by a pitch and a base runner reaching on an error Sophia Sanchez who drew the start would retire the next batter to end the game.

Sanchez in the win went all five innings allowing the two runs on five hits while walking one and striking out three.
