VALLEY CENTER (12-8-15) — When Steele Canyon arrived at Valley Center on Monday (Dec. 7) afternoon, the Cougars seemed to catch the Mavericks by surprise.
“They said they didn’t know they had a game,” said Cougars coach PETER RUIZ. “Then we had to scramble around for referees and we couldn’t even play our JV game.”
The delay didn’t hamper Steele Canyon, which knocked off Valley Center 48-40 in a non-league encounter.
The Cougars started fast, taking a 12-8 lead and maintained a 26-18 halftime advantage.
Steady ASHLEY TAVIZON whistled in 21 points to help the Cougars post their third win in as many starts.

DESTINI ANDERSON, a transfer from Helix, made her Mount Miguel debut and played about 18 minutes according to Matadors coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL. She contributed 6 points and 5 rebounds in her first game with the Matadors.
“She was obviously nervous and got into foul trouble,” Sandoval said.
