Foothillers out-gun Centurions, 12-10

UNIVERSITY CITY (3-21-22) – A 7-run outburst in the fifth inning would lead to an eight-run lead for Grossmont who would fend off a late charge by University City to claim a 12-10 victory on Monday afternoon in a non-league contest.

On the day the Foothillers would mash out 19 hits and score in just about every inning.

Grossmont got on the board first on an RBI single by Lauren Becker (2-5, R, RBI). Natalie Emery (1-2, 3R, SB) would come into score on the base hit to make it 1-0 in the top of the first inning.

They would add another run in the top of the second inning on an RBI single by Ashley Beard (2-5, R, RBI) to make it 2-0. However, the Centurions would tie the game in the bottom of the inning on a two-run triple.

But the Hillers would retake the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning courtesy of a base hit by Alison Murphy (1-2, RBI) and Jenna Ennis (2-4, R, 3 RBI, 2B) driving in Katelynne Parent (3-3, 3R, RBI, 2B) to make it 4-2. Once again though University City would answer as they scored a run in the bottom of the inning to pull within 4-3.

RBI single by Na’Khia Lee (2-3, RBI) in the top of the fifth extended the lead to 5-3, Ennis followed with a two-run double that scored both Isabel Cervantes (1-4, R, RBI) and Natalie Tavarez (RUN), later Jade Daley (2-4, R, 3 RBI, 2B) doubled in both Ennis and Emery to make it 10-3 and Parent finished things up with a base hit to score Daley to give the Foothillers an 11-3 lead.

However, the Centurions didn’t go down quietly as they scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull within 11-6. Grossmont would add another run in the top of the seventh inning when Cervantes drove in Parent to make it 12-6.

University City would mount one more push behind four runs scored to pull within 12-10 before Eliana Vasquez who came into the contest earlier in relief finished things off to end the threat and the ballgame.

Picking up the victory for the Hillers was Caitlyn Potts who went three innings in which she allowed three runs on five hits while striking out six, Vasquez came in and got the save as she went four innings in which she allowed seven runs on six hits while walking two.

Grossmont with the win improves to 7-3.
