FLETCHER HILLS — The Pacific Coast Athletic Conference leading Grossmont College Griffins escaped another scare from San Diego City College, but in the end it finally worked..
Left fielder Patrick McLellan delivered a game-winning basehit, as the Griffins tallied twice to secure a 7-6 walk-off victory over the visiting Knights in Tuesday’s ((Mar 15) PCAC action at Noel Michelsen Field.
Grossmont center fielder Ethan Caschetta batted 4-for-5 with an RBI, raising his batting average to .343 on the season, averaging nearly an RBI per start (18 in 19 appearances).
Trailing by a run, catcher Kaleb Tedokon opened the ninth with a lead double, with pinch-runner Nick Seabrook sent home on the decsive basehit by Caschetta to knot the ballgame.
Later, with a runner at third base, the runner believed a fly ball was deep enough to tag-and-score on, with the perfect throw landing in the glove of the City College catcher on one hop.
However, .Grossmont would eventually load the bases with two down, McLellan delivered the fourth hit of the inning, a line single to cash-in the winning run.
Grossmont was down 6-1 after four frames, but the bullpen of Clayton Longonitti, Chandler Cameron and winning pitcher Andrew Shirvanian shut down City on just two hits over the balance of the ballgame.
The Griffins moved to 12-7 overall, 5-1 in PCAC play, maintaining its
SDCC, which opened the series in a tie with the Griffins for first place at 3-1,fell to 5-1 in conference play (8-8 overall).
