EL CAJON (12-5-15) — Grossmont College began play in the 44th Annual Grossmont Holiday Classic Friday (Dec. 4) coming off a disappointing 25-point defeat to Mt. San Jacinto 19 days ago.
The Griffins (4-3) were focused on Santa Barbara City College, which dropped four straight games headed into the Holiday Classic. Grossmont came away with an 85-68 victory.
The win advanced to the semifinal round where they will meet College of the Desert Saturday (Dec. 5) at 6 p.m.
Helix high alum KAELEN MITCHELL led the night offensively for the Griffins, pouring in 21-points on 8-for-13 shooting from the floor. DANIEL McCOWN was red hot from beyond the arc, finishing with 20-points and connecting on 5-for-6 from long range.
“Kaelen came out and played awesome to start the second half,” assistant coach KEVIN BUTTY said of the Griffins’ sophomore guard. “DANIEL McCOWN played great and we got a lot of good play from EVIN SHEPHERD as well.”
Shepherd finished with 10-points and three assists.
Butty wasn’t surprised with the outcome, noting that, based on the film the team had reviewed of Santa Barbara, the Griffins expected to play well. What the Griffins may not have expected was the incredible night from above the arc. Grossmont shot 12-for-22 from three-point range. The Griffins also had a stellar night at the charity stripe going 13-for-16 on free throws.
“We haven’t been shooting free throws like that, so that’s really good to see” Butty said of the high percentages.
