ECS staff report
SANTEE — San Diego Christian College women’s softball welcomed Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for the first-ever meeting between the programs.
The Athenas, which rest just one game behind in the loss column to NCAA Division III No.1-ranked Chapman University, figured to take a doubleheader sweep Monday (Mar. 14) at SportsPlex USA.
However, the Hawks had other ideas.
Following a season-long dialog, the Hawks posted yet another split of a twinbill, thanks to an opening 2-1 verdict over CMS. The Athenas took the second contest, 10-1 by run rule, but that didn’t take anything away from gaining a split for the improving Hawks (7-9 overall) in the non-conference event.
Senior pitcher Amaryssa Medina carried a shutout into the final inning, settling for a 4-hitter to collect the win, Medina struck out seven CMS batters, supported by a pair of early runs.
In the first, freshman Maya Abrego opened with a lead single, advancing to third base on a pair of grounders to the right side. With two down, Emily Lonetree, who was elevated to the cleanup spot, again proved her appointment with line RBI single up the middle.
Two frames later, San Diego Christian grabbed a 2-0 lead on a pair of CMS errors.
Lisette Mejias reached on a miscue, then Alicia Corona reached on an infield single. But when the throw to first base sailed down the right-field line,Mehias scored.
The Athenas received a one-out triple in the seventh, followed by an RBI single. However, Medina then walked a batter and hit another to load the bases.
But the Hawks defense survived on a close fielder’s choice at the plate, then Medina registered her final strike out for the win.
San Diego Christian returns to GSAC play with a pair of home doubleheaders this week, hosting Menlo College on Friday, then William Jessup College on Saturday. Both start at noon.
