CHULA VISTA — Hilltop High baseball officials announced the pairing for the championship game of the Hilltop-Lolita’s Tournament, which will feature one unexpected entry.
The obviously “in” ballclub is Santana, the lone squad among the 10 entrants with a perfect record in four starts. The Sultans allowed just three runs in four outing.
However, Santana’s anticipated opponent, Bonita Vista, will not be making the trip to the finale. Despite the Barons’ late rally from an 8-run deficit over the last two innings to stun Granite Hills, 16-12 in 8 innings earlier in the week, it will be the Eagles advanced to the second berth on a series of tie-breakers.
The obvious tie-breaker would be Bonita Vista’s head-to-head with against Granite Hills. However, the teams did not tie in the standing.
On Thuyrsday Bonita Vista was upset by Del North both 2-2 markers. Thus, Granite Hills finished in a 3-way tie for second place, joining La Costa Canyon and Poway with 3-1 marks.
Fortunately for the Eagles, they faced — and defeated – both the Mavericks and Titans, gaining title game berth against their Grossmont Hills League rivals.
UPDATE: The contest is slated for Hilltop’s ballpark, the historic John Baumgarten Memorial Field, on Saturday at 1 p.m., but with anticipated heavy rains striking the region early Friday morning, the game will probably be postponed and lated later this season
