Monarchs nearly dent record book

LINDA VISTA — Monte Vista High nearly registered a school record for scoring, collecting 27 runs in an avalanche of a victory over host Kearny, 27-13, on Friday (Feb. 25).

The Monarchs, in winning for the first time in three starts this season, fell one short of the school mark of 29, established on Mar. 16, 2017, when they rolled Mount Miguel, 29-5.

The East County record — depending on your definition — is 52 by Mountain Empire (rural) and 48 by Christian (metro) in shutout victories. The RedHawks beat Vincent Memorial of Calexico in 1999 for the second-highest run total in CIF-San Diego Section history; Christian, the original record holder, remains third on the list in whipping La Jolla Country Day in 1977.

Two years following the Patriots’ section mark, the Torres (now “Torreys”) set a California state record — which still stands to this day — after taking out the now-defunct Southland Christian, 72-0, in a contest where the LJCDS head coach was fired the next day by school officials for “unsportsmanlike conduct.”

The umpire in that infamous contest was also fired by the CIF but then reinstated after LJCDS officials came to his defense. School officials stated that the game official did attempt to stop the contest innings earlier.

At the time, there was no such thing as a run-rule or any precedent for halting a game early. According to the school at the time, that’s when the Torres coach crossed the line.

No game highlights between the Monarchs and Komets — other than the score — were reported.
