ESCONDIDO (12-2-15) — For the second night in a row, the West Hills Wolf Pack gained a victory as this time they traveled to the North County on Tuesday (Dec. 1st) to take on Del Norte in the Tip-Off Classic. The Wolf Pack defeated the Nighthawks 49-31.
The first quarter was a tight one as the Wolf Pack only led 14-12 due to a slow start but the second quarter saw them pick things up in the fact that they limited the Nighthawks to only 2 points. West Hills thanks to its intensity in the second quarter would extend their lead to 10 points to lead 24-12 at the break.
Leading the way for the Wolf Pack was the scoring duo of CARLY RALEY who poured in 13 points and grabbed 8 boards while MAYA CLEMONS chipped in with 12 points. Another contributor was MEGAN SCOTT who put up 9 points and corralled 8 boards.
The second half was more of the same for the Pack as they were able to extend their advantage thanks in part to a semi-dominating third quarter by outscoring Del Norte 18-8 and push their lead to 42-22.
“Overall it was a good team effort but we will have to play better Thursday if we want to beat La Costa Canyon (in Encinitas),” Said West Hills head coach RYAN KINSER.
West Hills: Carly Raley 13 (8 reb, 2 ast, 3 stl, 1 blk), Maya Clemons 12 (4 reb, 1 stl), Megan Scott 9 (8 reb, 2 ast, 3 stl), Vivian Panella 8 (2 reb, 6 ast, 2 stl), Jessica Fondas 5 (2 reb, 1 stl), Kerrie Daniels 2 (6 reb, 1 stl), Summer Stewart (1 reb)
GRANITE HILLS 45, MORSE 19 – Granite Hills survived an unusual experience in Tuesday’s (Dec. 1) Matador Classic at Morse.
That is, not only did the Eagles hold the Tigers to single digits across the board en route to a 45-19 victory, they did so with multiple malfunctions on the various Morse clocks.
“This was one of the most unusual contests that I’ve ever been a part of,” said Granite Hills coach CURTIS NORWOOD. The shot clock kept going off and the horn kept sounding indiscriminately.
“It was a comedy of errors from a game management standpoint. They were training new people on the scoring table. It was quite disconcerting.”
“We had a senior team and persevered through a cumbersome contest. I’m very proud of the girls for keeping their heads up and making the best of a bad situation.”
MICAYELA HERNANDEZ led the Eagles in scoring with 15 points, and RAELLEAH MOORE was close behind with 13 markers.
“I’m looking forward to playing the top team in the state tomorrow at La Jolla Country Day,” he added. “They have a 6-2 girl.”
Granite Hills: Micayela Hernandez 15, Raelleah Moore 13, Emma Kubari 7, Miranda Brown 7, Chase Robles 2, Delaney Casey 1.
STEELE CANYON 40, LINCOLN 34 – Steele Canyon was deadly from the free throw line in Tuesday’s (Dec. 1) non-league encounter with Lincoln at Cougar Canyon.
The Cougars netted 17 of 21 free throws, including 6-for-6 efforts from ASHLEY TAVIZON and JULES LOIBL.
These two were also the leading scorers as Tavizon knocked down 16 and Loibl spun in 15 points.
“It was an ugly win but we’ll take it,” said Cougars coach PETER RUIZ. “In the second half we were making too many turnovers. We have some work to do.”
Steele Canyon: Ashley Tavizon 16, Jules Loibl 15, Maria Estavilla 4, Mariah Smith 2, Elizabeth Bott 1, Mya Cross 1, Marianna Martinez 1.
GROSSMONT 56, O’FARRELL 9 – Junior TAISHA SILAS knocked down 24 points as the host Grossmont buried O’Farrell in Tuesday’s (Dec. 1) non-league opener. Silas nailed 2 of 6 shots from the 3-point line and 9 of 17 from the field. She also recorded 3 steals and 2 rebounds.
Freshman ATHENA SOTELO hit 6 of 9 shots from the field for the Foothillers, while senior SIMONE GRIFFITHS had 10 assists and 7 steals.
Grossmont led 24-0 after the first quarter and O’Farrell scored its only points all in the second period.
Grossmont: Taisha Silas 24 (2 reb, 3 stl), Athena Sotelo 12 (6 ast, 4 stl), Alina McDuffie 7 (1 reb), Candace Henderson 5, Simone Griffiths 4 (10 ast and 7 stl), Jasmine Lee 4 (4 reb, 1 blk), Ragina Turner 4 (3 stl), Emily Barnes 3 (6 reb, 2 blk, 1 stl), Grace Cerado 2 (1 ast, 2 stl), Tassiana Lee 2 (3 reb).
VALHALLA 53, CLASSICAL ACADEMY 16 – The Norsemen, led by TIANA SILVER’s 20 points, marched past the Classical Academy Caimans 53-16 in the Fast Break – Calvin Christian Tournament on Tuesday (Dec. 1).
LISA DAMMAN pitched in 12 points for Valhalla, which led 43-12 after three quarters.
“The girls played solid,” said Norsemen coach MARC CARTER. “For the first game, we played okay. We still have a lot to learn but we’ll be okay.”
Valhalla: Tiana Silver 20, Lisa Damman 12, Melanie Joseph 8, Bianca Georges 6, Molly Lindsay 5, Jenna Yalda 2.
ST. JOSEPH ACADEMY 20, CHRISTIAN 18– Christian High did not live up to the name of the Fast Break – Calvin Christian Tournament in Tuesday’s (Dec. 1) first round.
Christian led until halfway through the second quarter, then the game went back and forth the rest of the way.
Freshman MARISSA GILES buried a pair of 3-pointers to finish with 11 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals.
Christian: Marissa Giles 11 (8 reb, 4 stl), Jasmyn Crawford 4 (8 reb, 1 blk, 4 stl), Brooke Owens 2 (1 reb, 5 stl), Hayley Robinson 1 (5 reb, 1 stl).
