Matadors take first versus Monarchs

SPRING VALLEY (1-26-2022) — Well, we knew it wouldn’t be a bike ride as the 14-6 Mount Miguel Lady Matadors went up to Monte Vista (10-13, 1-3 Grossmont Hills League). Monte Vista had just had a huge win over El Capitan, 64-27, and went up to the North County to face off against the Mira Mesa Lady Marauders. The Lady Monarchs didn’t fare as well against Mira Mesa.
The Lady Matadors (4-0 GHL) were coming off a loss to La Jolla Country Day (18-2), 68-44, and a big win over El Capitan, 84-14, on Tuesday. Mount Miguel was the favorite in this one.
However, the Lady Monarchs were expected to compete and be a little closer than it turned out to be.
Mount Miguel typically starts off with double digits but not, as usual, to be up 22-5 against most teams, a few teams, but this was not expected.
Micyaah Flournoy and Meadow Delino each had a bucket as Lina DeLeon had one point for a free throw.
Nataly Bravo led with eight points in the first quarter for the Lady Matadors. Bravo has been on a scoring tear as of late.
The Lady Monarchs pickled up one more point than in the second quarter, but couldn’t muster more than six in the second quarter as the Lady Matadors continued to dominate.
It was 46-11 at the half, is what the scoreboard read. One couldn’t even fathom what Monte Vista head coach Sabrina Jimenez said to her squad after putting up 11 points in one half, however it didn’t get better for the Lady Monarchs.
Flournoy had two free-throw attempts, and they missed along with the Lady Matadors leading 22-0, as Monte Vista was held to no points in the third. This was by far one of the toughest games, especially offensively, that Monte Vista had played.
By now, Mount Miguel head coach Robbie Sandoval has no press and playing his bench, maybe even trying some new plays he has come up with.
The fourth quarter ended 12-3 and the final, 80-14, Lady Matadors.
“We have to play all four quarters. We know what we are up against, no excuse not to compete,” said Jimenez.
As mentioned before, Bravo, especially in the paint, has been phenomenal as of late.
Jennifer Moreno led the team in scoring with 24 total points, four three-pointers, and three rebounds.
Bravo had 20 total points, a rebound, an assist, and four steals.
Zanna Hurst had seven points, six rebounds, and four steals, while Ixchel Rojo had seven rebounds, seven assists, and 10 steals.
Danay Williams-Pope added 15 points, eight rebounds, and an assist.
For Monte Vista, Flournoy led the Monarchs with seven total points, a three-pointer, a two-point field goal, and two free throws made.
