PINE VALLEY (1-20-2022) — As the varsity boys basketball team at Mountain Empire High School had done for the first time, well two things. The varsity boys were the first to play on their absolutely beautiful new floor, they were also the first home team to win on the floor.
As has been said before, each and every time this young up-and-coming girls basketball team at Mountain Empire High is learning the fundamentals of the game, they are also becoming more talented, believing in each other and in themselves.
On Tuesday afternoon. all the practices with head coach Alex Otero, and the previous games played, assisted the Lady RedHawks in almost pulling off their first true win along with a win at home in their upgraded gymnasium.
The Lady RedHawks (1-5, 0-1 Pioneer League) came out playing very well, and even led, playing offense and defense over the visiting Warner Wildcats (1-3, 0-1 Manzanita League), putting up six points over the Wildcats and held the Lady Wildcats to a measly two points, as the Lady RedHawks won the first quarter, 6-2.
Unfortunately, Mountain Empire, although playing well on both sides of the ball, Warner took the second quarter by a slim margin of 8-6 in the second quarter.
It was definitely a moment to be celebrated as the Lady RedHawks had the lead 12-10 at the half.
Caylee Hodson had 4 total points in the first half, two points from the field, 2-of-4 free throws, while Aisha Acevedo had four total points in the first half, was 4-for-4 from the field, and Carli McGhee was also 2-for-2 from the field.
Once again, the Lady RedHawks put up a 3-2 score to take the third quarter, as well.
As well as Mountain Empire played, even winning most of the game ended in the fourth as the visiting Wildcats kicked it into high gear, putting up 12 points to the Lady RedHawks’ four points.
The Wildcats won it in the end, 24-19.
“The girls played their best game of the season, they are finding their groove,” said Otero.
Two players on the evening had six points leading Mountain Empire, Acevedo and McGhee.
