2021-22 EAST COUNTY PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL

CHULA VISTA (1-11-2022)- Unfortunately, the Mountain Empire Lady RedHawks were not able to enjoy their first true home game on their new gymnasium floor. Instead, the Lady RedHawks headed on a long trip to the South Bay.
Mountain Empire (1-4) looked as if they would have a shot at winning on paper against Chula Vista Learning Community Charter (2-7).
In reality, the teams were equal as their one win each prior to their match, both teams received a forfeit win on behalf of Monarch High School. In fact, both Mountain Empire and CVLCC seemed to be scoring similar amounts of points and also seemed to be young, but also improving as each game they played was a learning moment.
The Lady RedHawks came out feeling confident in the first quarter, scoring seven to CVLCC’s 12.
Not a bad way to jumpstart and get back into basketball mode for the Lady RedHawks,
Things would begin to shift quickly for the hosts, as they would go up 15-5 in the second quarter, and a 27-12 lead for CVLCC at the half. This was not impossible for the Lady RedHawks to crawl back into this contest.
However, the 16-1 third quarter and the 12-2 fourth quarter left Mountain Empire with a 43-15 loss, but the Lady RedHawks did have a positive, they did score the most points on this young season with 15.
Carli McGhee led her team in points with three buckets and 1-for-1 free throws for seven points.
“The girls did well. Everyday the team is improving despite the obstacles that have hindered our facilities. The new players are feeling much more comfortable on the court, which shows in the stat line,” said coach Alex Otero.
Coming up next for the Mountain Empire Lady RedHawks (1-4), they will play their first true home game on the upgraded gymnasium floor versus the Warner Wildcats (1-2) on Tuesday, Jan. 18, at 4 p.m. This would be a special win as it will be their first in front of all their home fans from Pine Valley.
