SAN DIEGO (12-27-2021) — Coming off a short winter’s nap, the Granite Hills Lady Eagles were back in flight  Monday evening.

The Dominguez Dons, out of Compton, were most definitely on quite a tear prior to the meeting with Granite Hills, while Granite prior to the break lost a heartbreaker in overtime by 1 at the local tournament at El Cajon Valley High School to the Lady Hornets from Calipatria.

Either way, the Lady Eagles were raring to go and test their skills at another talented group, although the Lady Eagles dropped this one, 39-26

It was the Lady Eagles who came out without the hot hands to take advantage in the first half,

The Lady Eagles were down 17-6 to the Dons at the half relying heavily on the Eagle ‘D’ to keep them within striking distance.

Granite kept its composure, as head coach Jermani Stewart must have given and shown some great ways to dig deep within themselves.

The second half had the Lady Eagles losing the second half, 22-20, but not without incredible effort.

One of the standout players in this particular contest was none other than junior Andrea Dankha.

Dankha had a bucket on the evening, but assisted on the defensive side of the ball, allowing for her teammates to catch the Dons and try and possibly steal one from the Lady Dons.

“Unfortunately we didn’t have two of our main starters, so it created a challenge. The Dons played very aggressively and scrappy, which caused us to play even harder. I did have a few steals, however, I missed some open opportunities to knock down some shots. The loss was a result of turnovers and second opportunity shots that we gave up. I was proud of my defense and the rest of the team, as it helped us put more shots up. We played as a team even though we had some inconveniences, and although we lost the game, it helped me step up my game against teams like this,” said Dankha.

Senior Jade Hughes had nine points total with two buckets while making 5-of-8 free throws.

Most definitely a valiant effort against an outstanding talent out of Compton, coming up a bit shy.
