EL CENTRO (12-28-2021) – The Christian High Lady Patriots have faced plenty of adversity this season.
They have traveled, and they have had their triumphs, as well. Unfortunately, this was not one of those.
We all think of how tough the North County teams are from San Diego County, but the variety that hail from Northern California is a whole different type of good, some even great.
However, this season, the young Lady Pats team always has some glimpses of greatness.
Always some different girls stepping up at different times and on different sides of the ball.
Tuesday evening would be no different as senior JP Melvin and junior Alyssa Speers, both with double-digit scoring evenings, again showing the diversity of this young and unpredictable Lady Patriot squad.
Christian came out firing on both sides of the ball, down only 21-17 after one-quarter of play, then the wheels started to come off as Clovis East put up a 20-9 second quarter, and a huge 41-26 advantage over the Lady Patriots at the half, making a difficult but possible comeback for the second half of play.
As the ladies heard the game plan, thought about head coach Vickie Carrinton’s schemes, took it into the third quarter, unfortunately, overwhelmed and not able to claw back into this one, losing badly, 13-3, in the third, however, the glimmer of light similar to the first quarter, showing up 15-11 into the fourth, in the eventual loss, 65-44.
Once again, however, Melvin had just maybe two points the night before, was one of the two ladies with double-digit scoring points that evening, the other being junior Alyssa Speers.
Melvin, who put up 12 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, and three steals said, “To be honest, I didn’t really think about how I was gonna come out and take care of business. I just did it. The more positive I am, and encouraged, the better my game is.”
Speers also put up 12 points, two three-pointers, a rebound, an assist, and two steals.
“I think it’s easier to play offense when you work well with your teammates,” Spears said. “Despite some turnovers, I think we did well, being willing to pass to get across the floor more effectively. This teamwork allowed us to realize how well we can play when we work together for God’s glory. Overall, I was happy with our teamwork and heart. I think we will continue to find more success if we continue with that mindset.”
