Matadors pass test at NIKE Tournament

PHOENIX – The Mount Miguel Matadors were impressive on Wednesday night, defeating the 25th-ranked team from Arizona, Mesa High, in a 53-40 decision at the 2021 NIKE Tournament of Champions.

The victory was Mount Miguel’s third-straight at the event, as Las Matadoras dropped their tournament opener versus Seton Catholic, of Arizona, 55-51, in overtime on Saturday.

The Matadors bounced back to take down Chandler (Ariz.), 53-37, on Monday, before smashing St. Anthony, 68-50, on Tuesday.

The result gave the Matadors a ninth-place finish in their division at the event, which seems an unjust result considering the deep caliber of competition.

All three of the Matadors’ victories came without leading scorer Jennifer Moreno, who suffered a sprained ankle in the opener.

Against Seton Catholic, Danay Williams-Pope had 13 points, six rebounds, and four assists.

Zanna Hurst ended up as the second-leading scorer against Seton Catholic with 11 points, including three three-pointers. She also grabbed five rebounds.

Moreno ended with nine points.

KK Luffborough had six points, five steals, and three rebounds for Mount Miguel.

Ixchel Rojo had six points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals for MMHS.

Nataly Bravo had four points and three rebounds for the Matadors.

On Monday against Chandler, Williams-Pope led the way with 17 points and eight rebounds.

Rojo ended with 10 points, eight steals, and four assists.

Bravo had eight points, including a couple of threes.

Helen Rosales had 10 points and seven rebounds for Mount Miguel.

Hurst finished with five points and three assists.

Luffborough had three points and eight rebounds.

In the finale over, St, Anthony, Rojo was hot with 22 points, including four threes, along with five assists.

Williams-Pope was a strong force with 20 points and 15 rebounds

Hurst and Bravo both had a pair of threes to finish with eight points apiece.

Yaneli Rosales finished with six points and seven rebounds.

Mt. Miguel trailed 14-11 at the end of the first quarter, but the halftime score was 30-22 in favor of Las Matadoras.

Mount Miguel led by 21 points entering the fourth.
