EL CAJON – The Granite Hills boys varsity basketball team – behind the high-scoring brother tandem of Derek and Tre Edmond – defeated El Capitan in resounding fashion, 85-57, in Lakeside on Monday night.
The Eagles started hot and remained hot for much of the game, outscoring the Vaqueros 23-13 in the first quarter.
The Edmond brothers combined for 58 points for Granite Hills, as Derek had 30 points and Tre was right behind him with 28 points. Tre Edmond was coming off a 54-point effort in the Eagles’ previous contest last Thursday against Castle Park.
“We have been starting games with a press and it’s been looking very good,” Tre Edmond said. “We get steals that lead to easy buckets.”
Granite Hills recorded 20 steals against the Vaqueros.
The Eagles made 11 three-pointers on the night, including six by Derek Edmond, who at one point in the first half, hit on four consecutive attempts – all from three-point range.
Derek Edmond had a team-high 12 rebounds.
“Tre and I don’t compete against one another when we play but we usually trash talk each other before and after the game,” Derek said. “We played great defense tonight and we have been putting a lot of pressure on teams recently and it has been working very well.”
Granite Hills sophomore Isaiah Hasten also finished in double figures with 12 points, including nine steals. Tre Edmond added six steals.
“One of our newest strategies on defense is our press game,” Hasten said. “I have found that pressing is one of my strongest points in basketball. We pressed for the majority of the game to wear the other team down and that’s when I was able to get steals and points. It feels great knowing that I can play up with the juniors and seniors, being able to build that chemistry will definitely help later down the road.”
The Eagles coasted to the win, leading by 27 points after three quarters.
Lawand Zagana had seven blocked shots for GHHS.
El Capitan senior Desean Desinor led his team with 18 points. He also grabbed eight boards.
Junior Micah Odell added 15 points and 14 rebounds for the Vaqueros, while senior teammate Trevor Mokelstad added 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Odell and Mokelstad combined for five blocked shots.
Junior Jayden Johnson had a three-pointer for El Cap.
