EastCountySports.com staff report
LAKESIDE — Why not Savi?
El Capitan senior Savigon Yokley has already been wowing fans all season with his variety of spectacular plays, particularly as the quarterback of the Vaqueros.
But after his four-touchdown performance in the biggest game of the season-to-date on Homecoming, why couldn’t the Vaquero star be the county’s top player this season?
Yokley showed that he could run it, pass it, throw it, defend it, and maybe, even kick it, in a 35-0 win over the visiting Santana Sultans in a Grossmont Valley League showdown on Friday night.
The talented, 6-foot-3, 180-pound star intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown, threw a pass for a touchdown, rushed for a touchdown, and caught a pass for a touchdown – all in the first half, as the Vaqueros scored all of their points in the first 18:50 of the contest.
This season, Yokley has passed for 751 yards and 10 touchdowns, rushed for 449 yards and eight touchdowns, and caught seven passes for 219 yards and three touchdowns. Not to mention, his pick-six.
Not only is he a starter on defense, but he also serves as the team’s punter, which makes him that much more dangerous on fourth down, as he rushed out of punt formation for a long gain to extend a drive against the Sultans.
The Vaqueros improved to 5-1, 2-0, while Santana dropped to 5-1, 1-1. West Hills (6-0, 2-0) had a bye and are on a possible course to face the Vaqueros for the league championship on the final night of the season, although the Sultans will still have their say, visiting the Wolf Pack the week prior.
The Vaqueros’ Julian May had El Capitan’s first touchdown, picking a punt off the turf and returning it 45 yards for a score just 3:15 into the contest.
On the Sultans’ next play from scrimmage, Yokley recorded his first score of the night on a 36-yard interception return to the end zone, easily reading the Sultans’ intentions as El Cap scored its second touchdown with just 12 seconds expired off the clock.
The Sultans fumbled the kickoff back to El Cap and Yokley would score on a 9-yard run from scrimmage with 22 seconds left in the first quater.
For his touchdown catch, Yokley showed his ability in one-on-one coverage to catch a 24-yard pass from quarterback Bruce Newland with 5:10 left in the first half.
Yokley also had a 67-yard pass completion to Daisean Desinor.
The second half was played with a running clock.
Unfortunately for the Sultans, starting quarterback Nick Leger suffered a possible fracture to his arm.
Junior Shaun Martin replaced Leger had a 35-yard run.
Junior Logan Ellis had 35 yards on 10 carries for Santana.
