RIVERSIDE (11-15-15) — The Grossmont College Griffins dropped the winner’s bracket semi-final at the 2nd annual “Earning Our Stripes” tournament at Riverside City College to the host Tigers 78-68. The Griffins will face Cerritos in the third place game today at 2 p.m. in Riverside.
Three Griffins (1-1) reached double figures in scoring, led by freshmen Courtney Branch (Patrick Henry) who had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore JAZMINE BRADLEY (Monte Vista) had 12 points and freshman ASHTYN HURRELL (Coronado) had ten points off the bench.
The Tigers (3-1) were led by Jordan Lofton who led all scorers with 21 points, while shooting 64 percent (9 of 14). Doylebonet Walker had 18 points on six of eight shooting, and Vyvy Tran had 11 points off the bench.
Grossmont jumped out to an 11-8 lead halfway into the first quarter. That is when Riverside started their run. The Griffins kept just enough ahead that it took the Tigers a little longer than what they were expecting to gain the lead. It wasn’t until two and a half minutes remaining in the quarter that Riverside took the lead on a Lofton layup for a 17-15 lead. That was part of a 9-3 run that the Tigers went on to close out the quarter.
Riverside continued the run to begin the second quarter to take a 27-18 lead 90 seconds into the frame. The second period was not a very kind quarter for the Griffins as the Tiger defense held them to only nine points, while the Tigers poured in 19 points to take a 41-25 lead at the break.
Both teams put 21 points on the board in the third quarter.
Grossmont cut into the Tiger lead in the fourth quarter, but not quite enough as Riverside played just enough defense to keep the Griffins at arm’s length in the contest
