EastCountySports.com staff report
No. 6 EASTLAKE 10, No. 15 STEELE CANYON 6 – Two of the county’s best defenses lived up to the billing with the Titans scoring the game’s only touchdown on offense at Canaris Stadium on Friday night.
Steele Canyon’s Spencer Campillo had a 21-yard interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter to give the Cougars a 6-0 lead.
Campillo also had a sack that forced a fumble on Eastlake’s opening drive, which was recovered by senior teammate Isaiah Walker.
Steele Canyon’s Temo Rangel and Keanu Pettiford combined on a tackle-for-loss in the third quarter but the Cougars sustained a drive and scored on a 13-yard, second-effort run by two-way star Tre White.
The Cougars’ Nathaniel Gillis came up with a timely interception in the fourth quarter to put his team in scoring position but the Titans came up with a pick of their own by Jayden Cortell in the red zone for his second of the night and returned it into Cougar territory, swiping back the momentum.
Kalen Jones, of the Titans, added a 35-yard field goal for the final margin.
Steele Canyon junior Major Givens rushed for 106 yards against the strong Titan defense but the hosts prevailed in the season opener.
Cougar senior Adrien Chargualaf had a batted pass in the second quarter. He led the Cougars with 10 solo tackles, while Campillo added nine solo stops and Gillis finished with seven solo stops.
Steele Canyon senior Davis Langfeldt had a leaping, one-handed interception at the Cougar 8-yard line late in the second quarter.
The Steele Canyon starting quarterback was sophomore Matthew Barton, while Eric King, a senior, started the second half.
Eastlake has now won seven of eight all-time meetings between the schools.
Steele Canyon will host Madison on Friday.
MISSION BAY 48, EL CAJON VALLEY 0 – The Braves forced a punt on the first series of the game with a three-and-out, and then El Cajon Valley was sharp on its initial possession, which included a fourth-down conversion.
The drive, which was almost terminated when the Braves had to recover their own fumble, was spurred by the running of junior Kal-el Gordon.
However, the Buccaneers made the stop at the 1-yard line to terminate the serious scoring threat.
From there, Mission Bay, which has a very potent offense, got on track quickly.
Mission Bay QB Clash Orsborn passed for five touchdowns and rushed for another for the visiting Buccaneers.
Orsborn threw for over 300 yards, as well.
Orsborn had a touchdown pass followed by a touchdown run on the next two Bucs’ possessions to take a 14-0 lead with 35 seconds left in the first quarter.
The Braves finished with some nice rushing numbers between Gordon, who had 92 yards on 15 carries, and senior Ahmed Sohail Ameer Hussein, who toted the ball 13 times for 59 yards.
Gordon had a 40-yard run to highlights the Braves’ rushing efforts.
The pair of backs also combined on a defensive turnover when Ameer Hussein forced a fumble, which was recovered by Gordon.
Three different Braves completed passes, although the starter was knocked out of the game on the team’s second series, which resulted in a punt.
Senior Daniel Jacobs had three receptions for 27 yards for the Braves and had a 34-yard kickoff return.
Sophomore Shane Hopson led El Cajon Valley with six tackles.
No. 4 LINCOLN 49, MONTE VISTA 0 – The Monarchs got an all-too-early look at one of the top teams in the county.
Quarterback Jalen Daniels passed for five touchdowns and ran for two more.
“Well, we got beat by a very, very good team,” said Monte Vista head coach Ron Hamamoto, who coached Lincoln to 25 wins over four seasons when the campus reopened in 2007. “We suited up 21 players against a stacked team with all their transfers.”
Monte Vista junior Dakota Jacome got his hands on Daniels for a sack in the first half.
Hamamoto said that he hopes to get some more players back after they complete the required 10 practices before they are allowed to compete.
“Hopefully, with more guys back and back-to-back D4 games, we will pick up some wins,” Hamamoto said.
The Monarchs are in a much more competitive and favorable situation this Friday when the Rancho Buena Vista Longhorns come to Spring Valley.
Monte Vista quarterback Jayden Richardson suffered a minor hand injury, which limited his ability against the Hornets, but the coach reported that he would be back for the game against RBV.
ARMY & NAVY ACADEMY 36, FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 0 — The Knights didn’t play a spring season and were returning to 11-man football for the first time since 2014.
On top of that, the Knights were coming into the game with a 17-game winning streak, while the Warriors had won just three of their last 20 on-field contests, including a 1-1 mark in the spring.
However, the Knights amassed their wins dominating the county’s 8-man division.
Tobey Brill rushed for four touchdowns for the Warriors.
The teams meet again next month, although that will contest will count in the league standings.
The Knights shouldn’t struggle for long despite the re-classification. Head coach Joe Mackey is 37-7 at FCHS since taking over the 8-man job in 2016.
The San Bernardino Cardinals come to Seau Field this Friday following their 55-0 non-league win over Desert Mirage, of Thermal.
