EL CAJON – A handful of East County teams will take place in the biggest public scrimmage event of the preseason as the 7th annual SDFNL Kickoff Classic is held on Friday and Saturday night at two local stadiums.

Admission to any of the contests is one canned good, which is collected in bins at the entrance. The promoters of the games will be giving the goods to local food banks.

The Grossmont Hills League champion Granite Hills Eagles will host the Lincoln Hornets in a scrimmage on Friday at 5 p.m., followed by a scrimmage between the Mountain Empire Redhawks and San Diego Cavers at 7 p.m.

Also on Friday, the Valhalla Norsemen will scrimmage against the La Jolla Vikings at El Capitan High School starting at 7 p.m.

Valhalla head coach Charles Bussey, starting his second stint with the team, had served as La Jolla’s defensive coordinator, helping the Vikes to recent historic success, before coming back to southeastern El Cajon.

On Saturday, the Vaqueros will host the Imperial Tigers in a scrimmage starting at 7 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Steele Canyon Cougars will match up with the Mater Dei Catholic Crusaders in a high-profile scrimmage at Granite Hills at 7 p.m., also on Saturday.

Several other county teams will scrimmage at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. at both sites on Saturday.
