Moody, Manes power Patriots over Cavers

SAN DIEGO – The once winless Christian Patriots have suddenly figured everything out.
Three runs in the fifth inning sent Christian (2-15, 2-2 CL) to its second straight victory by topping the host San Diego Cavers (8-11, 1-3 CL), 5-3, in City League action on Friday (May 14). BOXSCORE
The Cavers would take an early 1-0 lead on a couple of errors by the Patriots allowing Shemia Clady to score.
But Christian who offensively have been on all cylinders of late countered in the top of the fourth inning with a lead-off solo home-run by Kate Manes (3-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, 3B, HR) to tie the game at 1-1.
Manes would give the Patriots the lead in the top of the fifth inning when she tripled with two-outs that allowed Rachel Stephens (3-4, 2 R, 2B) to score to make it 2-1.
“We have a taste of victory now and keep playing better,” Manes said. “I feel more confident in our defense and that’s what’s translated into our success.”
Allyson Moody (2-3, R, 3 RBI, HR) followed with a two-run blast to left field to extend the lead to 4-1.
“I’m not sure what’s changed but whatever it is, seems to be working,” Moody quipped. “We’ve made a lot less fielding errors and that’s been helping us big time. Our offense has been doing well, too. We’re finally rounding out more as a team. We’ve been hitting more consistently and having good, smart at-bats.”
San Diego would add a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the Patriots lead to 4-2.
Base hits by Stephens, Devyn Krystek (1-3), and Manes would load the bases for Moody in the top of the seventh. She would lift a sacrifice fly to left field that allowed Stephens to come home and make it 5-2.
The Cavers would only push across one run in the bottom of the seventh inning before Moody recorded the final out to end the game.
Moody in the victory went all seven innings allowing three runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out three on the day.
Also, Chloe Hessom (2-3, 2B) had a pair of hits for the Patriots in the win.
