Hot-shooting Griffins go cold against Long Beach City

PALM DESERT (11-8-15) — Grossmont College forged in front of heavily favored Long Beach City College 54-45 in the first half of Saturday’s (Nov. 6) Frank Garcia Tournament consolation encounter at College of the Desert.

The Griffins knocked down more than 62 percent of their shots during the first 20 minutes to earn the 9 point advantage.

“In the second half it was almost like a flip-flop,” said Grossmont assistant coach JOHN CLARK. “They were on target and we weren’t so hot.”

Long Beach (2-1) poured on the coal in the second half to capture a 97-84 victory over the Griffins (1-2).

Where the Vikings burned the Griffins was at the free throw line, as they clicked on 33 of 42 charity shots.

For the third time in three games KAELEN MITCHELL paced Grossmont with 19 points, buoyed by 3-for-6 shooting from beyond the arc.

Backup point guard LARRY STOKES turned in another impressive performance with 12 points, 2 assists and 2 rebounds.

Australian REMY LAWYER contributed 10 points for the Griffins, as did DANIEL McCOWN.

LUKE JACKSON had an all around solid game with 8 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds.

SPENCER VERING chipped in 6 rebounds for Grossmont.

“We believe in our bench,” Clark said. “We have a lot of guys who contribute and tonight just about everybody did something.”

Grossmont led by as many as 17 points in the first half but could not maintain the momentum.

Next up for the Griffins is the San Diego City Knights Tournament, which runs from Friday (Nov. 13) through Sunday the 15^th. Grossmont opens the tournament against Barstow at 7 p.m. on the 13^th.
