LAKESIDE – With league play just around the corner the El Capitan Vaqueros (8-4) looked to add a signature win to their resume and on Friday (Apr.30) afternoon, and they did just that in a non-league tilt.
The Vaqueros would go onto defeat the visiting University City Centurions (10-3-1) 5-4 with a run scored in the bottom of the seventh inning with one out for the walk-off victory.
Before the seventh inning dramatics, the Vaqueros early on would take a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning thanks to a two-run triple by Jojo Christiaens (1-3, R, 2 RBI, 3B) that scored both Dom Garcia (3-3, 3 R) and Hailey Mulligan (RUN) which was followed by an Ava Gall (RBI) sacrifice fly that brought in Christiaens.
Trailing 3-0 the Centurions would get a run back in the top of the fourth inning courtesy of a Kyla Parco base hit that scored Carlotta Gonzalez to make it 3-1.
Another run for the Vaqueros in the bottom of the fifth inning courtesy of a Centurions error that allowed Garcia to score would make it 4-1.
However, the Centurions wouldn’t go away and would rally to tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the sixth inning. A two-run double by Riley Jenkins and a ball hit by Kennedy Maynard that was misplayed allowing Jenkins to score brought new life for the Centurions.
Moving to the bottom of the seventh inning the Vaqueros had a chance to do something before the game went into extra innings.
Leading off for El Capitan Garcia who so far had been perfect at the plate. She would lead off with a base hit to center field, after a ball was thrown Garcia advanced to second on a passed ball and would wind up at third base on a sacrifice bunt by Siana San Vicente.
With one out and Mulligan come to bat and Garcia at third things looked pretty good for the Vaqueros and it would pay off after a 1-2 count Kate Wiggins the pitcher for University City would throw a pitch that would get by the catcher for a passed ball and right away Garcia raced home for the game-winning score.
Wiggins would take the loss for the Centurions as she allowed five runs on five hits in her six and a third inning of work. She also struck out five.
On the other side for the Vaqueros, Brooke Horn picked up the complete-game win as she went all seven innings in which she allowed four runs on nine hits while striking out four.
With the win, the Vaqueros will get a boost to their playoff rankings as the Centurions came into today’s contest as the top-ranked team in Division II MaxPreps rankings.
