SPRING VALLEY – It was expected to be a matchup of two of the top four teams in the county but when Mount Miguel’s most valuable player left the game following an ankle injury in the first quarter, the Cathedral Catholic Dons took advantage right away.
Matador sophomore Jennifer Moreno made a three-pointer in the first quarter but couldn’t return.
Cathedral Catholic built a 20-10 lead after the first quarter.
Senior Araxta Fonseca scored 12 points for Mount Miguel.
Sophomore Ixchel Rojo made a pair of three-pointers for the Matadors.
Alyssa Garcia had a pair of treys for the Lady Dons in the first quarter.
Taryn Johnson and Izzy Navarro both had a team-high 18 points for Cathedral Catholic.
“We got whooped in all facets of the game,” Mount Miguel head coach Robbie Sandoval said. “We had too many missed layups and turnovers that resulted in easy points for them.”
BISHOP’S 76, CHRISTIAN 56 – Christian High’s Jaya Little scored a team-high 17 points but the Patriots fell to the Knights.
Little scored nine points in the third quarter, including making a three-pointer as Christian tried to get back in the game after trailing 41-20 at halftime.
“Bishop’s has a talented group of girls who and fast and keeping up with them is tough,” Little said. “I got some steals that lighted a spark for my team. I felt good out there because I was able to implement things that I have worked on in practice. We know the things we need to do to compete, we just need to work hard in practice and stay disciplined.”
Little also grabbed six rebounds and handed out three assists.
“(Little) played awesomely and was amazing on both ends,” Carrington said.
Kristin Williams added 16 points, making a pair of treys in the process. She scored nine points in the fourth quarter.
“My strength in this game was driving and kicking and getting the ball to my teammates,” Williams said. “This was just one game, we turn the chapter and learn from our mistakes and fix the turnovers. It’s the little things for us right now and once those are cleaned up, things should come easier. It starts in practice and executing in the game. I just need to lead the way those people around me have done.”
Serene Weckback and Tiffany Bickford both added eight points for the Lady Patriots. Weckback had a team-high nine rebounds.
“It felt amazing being able to finally play and reunite with my team,” said Bickford, who made her season debut on Monday. “It is truly a blessing to have the opportunity to be on the court with this team and represent this great program. I worked very hard this offseason to be able to perform for this team. My goal is to continue to get better.
Amyaha Walker had a three-pointer in the second quarter for the Pats.
Renee Chung scored 23 points, including five three-pointers, while teammate Angie Robles added 21 points for the Knights.
