DEl CERRO– On Wednesday (Apr. 23), Dezianna Patmon (3-3, 2 R, 6 RBI, 2 HR) continued her monster season as she belted a pair of home runs and drove in six-run to ensure the Patrick Henry Patriots cruised to a 15-4 victory over Del Norte.
Patrick Henry (7-2) started their scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Kaiah Altmeyer (2-4, 3 R, 2 RBI, SB, 3B, HR) belted a leadoff solo home run, a couple of batters later Olivia Gigante (2-2, 2 R, 4 RBI, HR) walked and Alexis Hampton (2 R) came into the game to run. Still, with only one out, Patmon stepped to the plate and blasted a two-run dinger over the left-field fence to give them a 3-0 lead.
Patmon would add to her tally in the bottom of the second as she belted a grand slam homerun which was her fourth of the season over the center-field fence to extend the lead to 8-0. Scoring on the homerun were Altmeyer, Jenel Mallari (1-3, 2 R) and Hampton.
Also in the inning, McKenna Gieger (1-3, RBI) would drive in Jessica DeWitt (2-3, R, RBI, 2 SB) to make it 9-0.
Another run for the Patriots in the bottom of the third came on a double steal with Altmeyer safe at second and Macy McGee (1-2, 2 R, SB) raced home on her attempt and was safe to make it 10-0.
The Patriots added to their large lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as Dewitt drove in Gigante to make it 11-0.
Del Norte (5-5) would avoid the shutout in the top of the fifth inning with four runs to make it 11-4.
Later in the bottom of the inning, Altmeyer roped a triple to right field that brought home Sydney Newton (1-2, R) and Gigante added a three-run home run, her sixth of the season to round things out and end the game.
Gigante picked up the shortened five-inning victory in which she gave up four runs on five hits while walking three and striking out four.
Santana 9 (12-3), Olympian 4
CHULA VISTA – Four runs in the top of the fourth and insurance runs in the top of the seventh secure the victory for the Santana Sultans, 9-4, on Friday (Apr. 23) over Olympian in the Hilltop Tournament.
Before the bats of the Sultans woke up the home team Eagles would strike first when Katie Steinmetz (1-4, RBI) drove in Itzell De Los Rios (1-4, R) in the bottom of the first inning to make it 1-0, later in the inning Arisa Tovar (2-4, R) scored on an error to make it 2-0.
Santana (12-3) would answer back with a run in the top of the second inning courtesy of a double by Jordyn Beatty (2-4, R, 2 RBI, 2B) to bring home Madison Jordan (RUN) to pull within 2-1.
Both sides settled down in the field and in the circle as neither team was giving an inch offensively.
But the Sultans would finally break thru in the top of the fourth and take a 3-2 lead when Kaitlyn Ours (2-4, 3 RBI) drove in both Kylee Ruiz (RUN) and Gilliane Johnston (1-3, R) with a base hit to left field, later in the inning Isabella Cyman extended the lead with an RBI single bringing in Anyssa Mazon (run).
Olympian (5-5) would add a run in the bottom of the inning to pull within 5-3 on a base hit by Aimee Alvarado (2-3, R) to score Rachel Sarmiento (RUN).
Later in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Eagles cut the Sultans lead to a single run when Arianna Kumar grounded out allowing Alyssa Gross (1-2, R) to come home.
However, Santana would add insurance runs in the top of the seventh thanks to Lainie Brown (1-1, R, 2B, RBI) who doubled in Hailey Phillips (3-3, R) to make it 6-4, back-to-back RBI base hits by Jordyn Beatty and Johnston made it 8-4. And finally, Ours would finish things off with another RBI single.
Hilltop (8-0-1) 8, Valhalla (5-5) 5
CHULA VISTA – Seven runs scored by the unbeaten Hilltop Lancers (8-0-1) over the first three innings does the job on Friday (Apr. 23) afternoon to preserve the 8-5 victory over Valhalla (5-5).
Valhalla though would strike first thanks to an RBI single by McKayla Fish and later a fielder’s choice by Aubrey Baker that allowed Naomi Villalva to score which made it 2-0.
But the momentum would quickly swing the way of the Lancers as Natalie Alvarez drove in Sarah Vega in the bottom of the first to make it 2-1.
Hilltop would tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second as Vega walked with the bases loaded to score Keilana Garalde, a two-run single by Sofia Vega gave the lancers a 4-2 lead which was followed by a sacrifice fly by Alvarez allowing Sarah Vega to tag up and score to make it 5-2.
A two-run double by Elizabeth Olguin in the bottom of the third inning made it 7-2 in favor of the Lancers.
Valhalla finally scored a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning thanks to Fish who singled and another ground ball hit by Baker.
The Lancers answered with another run in the bottom of the inning as Olguin laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to bring home Sarah Vega to make it 8-4.
Another run by the Norsemen in the top of the sixth inning thanks to Jordan who walked allowing Emily Van Der Zalm to come home.
Alexyia Reyes who got the starting nod for the Lancers allowed only a single hit in the top of the seventh inning before end the inning and the game.
Reyes would pick up the win as she went the distance giving up five runs on eleven hits while walking three and striking out three.
On the other side, Fish took the loss in which she worked six innings giving up eight runs while walking nine and striking out three.
Mt. Carmel (7-5) 5, Helix (10-3) 3
LA MESA – A late two-run single by Jonessa Hebreo of the Mt. Carmel Sun Devils in the top of the seventh inning secured the inthe Falcon fiesta 5-3 victory over Helix on Friday(Apr. 23) evening.
Early on the Highlanders (10-3) would lead thanks to an RBI single by Jolene Giles in the bottom of the first inning.
Neither offense could get anything going as both teams kept each other in check and it wouldn’t be until the top of the fourth inning when the Sun Devils would take advantage of a pair of errors by Helix that allowed them to take a 2-1 lead.
Mt. Carmel (7-5) would later add another run in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI single.
Now trailing 3-1 the Highlanders knew their opportunities were dwindling and that they had to get something going.
That something was a big momentum spark in the name of Kori Jonilonis who with two outs hammered an 0-2 count over the center field fence for a game-tying two-run blast.
But that momentum would be short-lived thanks to the two runs scored by the Sun Devils in the seventh inning.
Helix would be retired in order in the bottom of the seventh inning.
A day earlier, Helix fell to Torrey Pines in a battle of one-loss teams.
Mountain Empire (3-1) 21, Coastal Academy (0-1) 1 (5 inn.)
OCEANSIDE – Coastal Academy, part of the charter schools system which includes Classical Academy of Escondido, made its debut in softball on Friday (Apr. 23), but it will only be remembered by visiting Mountain Empire.
