SPRING VALLEY – The Mount Miguel Matadors’ Genevieve Costello was a relentless talent on the basketball court.
On Friday night, the Mount Miguel girls varsity basketball team took the court for their annual pink-out game to raise breast cancer awareness, and played with that same relentlessness in a 101-33 win over Monte Vista.
It’s the third time this season the Matadors have cracked the 100-point mark.
The Monarchs came in with a 10-2 record and a No. 19 county ranking in the latest media poll.
The Matadors, the county’s fifth-ranked team, got off to a blazing start, leading 30-9 at halftime.
They keep that pace and then some in the second quarter, extending the lead to 64-15.
Mount Miguel scored 30 more in the third quarter for a 90-21 bulge.
Sophomore Jennifer Moreno scored 25 points for the Matadors, including four three-pointers.
Sophomore Ixchel Rojo scored 21 points for Las Matadoras.
Senior Arantxa Fonseca finished with 19 points for Mount Miguel.
Junior Danay Williams-Pope ended with 16 points and 11 rebounds for Mt. Miguel.
Zanna Hurst made three three-pointers and finished with 12 points, to go along with four steals.
Samantha Gonzalez led Monte Vista with 11 points.
Micyaah Flournoy had a pair of three-pointers for the Monarchs.
Mount Miguel improved to 9-2.
WEST HILLS 46, HELIX 38 – The Wolf Pack upset the Highlanders in Santee thanks in large part to a 20-5 second-quarter edge.
Helix did its best to make a strong comeback in the fourth quarter. In fact, the Highlanders outscored the Wolf Pack, 9-0, over the final eight minutes.
Junior Angel Riggins led Helix with eight points and seven rebounds.
West Hills improved to 4-5.
SANTANA 36, EL CAJON VALLEY 29 – The Sultans held the Braves to just two points in the second quarter to take a 14-8 lead at halftime and captured the Grossmont Valley League opener.
Sophomore Aniyah Deloatch had 15 points for the Lady Braves.
GRANITE HILLS 28, STEELE CANYON 26 – This one finished as close as expected when these teams met in El Cajon on Friday.
Even though the Eagles improved to 5-4 and the Cougars fell to 1-4, the teams were virtually identical in the computer rankings this week.
Granite Hills has won four straight games.
GROSSMONT 65, VALHALLA 14 – The Foothillers ‘ Ariy’Ana Duke, a junior transfer from Helix, scored 24 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and made 12 steals as Grossmont coasted to victory against the Lady Norsemen on Friday night in the league opener.
The Foothillers improved to 4-3 overall.
BONITA VISTA 70, EL CAPITAN 28 – The third-ranked Lady Barons came to Lakeside and controlled the game against the ninth-ranked Lady Vaqueros in a sectional matchup.
Senior Emma Driskill led El Capitan (9-5) with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Senior Julia Cosalan led Bonita Vista (11-1) with 18 points.
Sophomore Kaylee Cole handed out five assists to lead El Cap, while Bonita Vista was led in assists by senior Sylena Peterson.
BISHOP’S 73, FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 18 – The Bishop’s Knights were much stronger than the Foothills Christian Knights in Friday night’s game.
