SPRING VALLEY – The fifth-ranked Mount Miguel Matadors defeated the Grossmont Foothillers, 75-27, in a Grossmont Conference game on Thursday night.
Sophomore Jennifer Moreno led the way with 22 points for Las Matadoras. She had four three-pointers that she connected on, while also contributing eight assists and four steals.
Sophomore Ixchel Rojo added 14 points, seven steals, and 10 assists.
“We are just trying to get better through our defense because that is the key to helping us win,” Rojo said. “I like when I can have many assists because then everyone on our team gets to score and that is how teamwork should be.”
Senior Arantxa Fonseca and junior Nataly Bravo both finished with 12 points for Mount Miguel. The duo teamed together at Foothills Christian last season.
“We play hard against every opponent no matter what,” Fonseca said. “We try to improve on everything and what’s best for the team.”
Zanna Hurst had a three-pointer on the way to nine points for Mt. Miguel, while teammate Danay Williams-Pope ended with six points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Mount Miguel led 21-6 after the first quarter and 38-12 at halftime.
The Matadors improved to 8-2 with the Grossmont Hills League season set to begin. However, Mount Miguel will also sprinkle in good matchups against other top teams throughout the remainder of the season.
Included in games still to come outside of the Grossmont Conference are meetings with No. 2 Cathedral Catholic and No. 18 Christian.
“We have to work and practice hard so we can meet our biggest goal and that is to win a CIF title,” Rojo said. “I think our team has the talent to do it. We now have more pieces in place compared to last year to rest and rotate players.”
Mount Miguel plays crosstown foe Monte Vista (10-2 overall, ranked 19th) tonight in its annual pink-out game to promote breast cancer awareness in honor of the late Genevieve Costello, a Matador great.
“We all play for pride and specifically in her memory,” Fonseca said. “I see how much the game means to everyone and we’ve heard how hard she would compete in every game, so we will be playing hard like that (on Friday night).”
