SPRING VALLEY – A big first inning by the visiting West Hills Wolf Pack to propel them to a convincing 19-1 victory on Wednesday (Apr. 14) afternoon.
West Hills (3-1) would get on the board with their first run when Alyssa Thornton (1-1, R, RBI) knocked in Shannon Kim (2-5, 3R, RBI, SB) to make it 1-0, Lily Youngdale (2R, RBI) would walk to bring home Sabrina Brown (2R, RBI, SB) to give them a 2-0 lead, both Marina Morales (R, RBI) and Brianna Bentley (R, RBI) followed with walks which scored both Thornton and Naomi Kai (RUN).
Amaya Angeli (1-1, R, RBI) knocked in a run as did Kim who came up to bat for the second time. The Pack would score four more runs in the inning to round out the scoring.
Another run scored by the Pack in the top of the second inning by Ava Trenkle (2R, RBI) extended the lead to 11-0.
Later in the top of the fourth, the bats exploded again for the Pack as Gabby Martinez (2-3, R, 3 RBI, 2B) drove in a pair of runs along with Samiya Wright (2-2, R, RBI) who had an RBI single. Other contributors included Youngdale, Brynn Snyder (1-1, 2R, RBI), and Emily Byrd (2-3, R).
Mount Miguel (1-5-1) would score their lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when Alex Schneider scored on an error by West Hills.
Elizabeth Rhodes for the Matadors got the nod but would take the loss as she gave up twelve runs in her two and a third innings of work, she also gave up five hits while walking six, in relief Giselle Valencia worked two and two-thirds innings in which she gave up seven runs on six hits while walking two and striking out one.
For the Pack, Youngdale picked up the win as she went two and two thirds in which she allowed one hit and struck out three, Maddie Edwards came in to relieve Youngdale and finished things up as she went two and a third in which she gave up a run while walking one and striking out two.
SANTANA 12, OUR LADY OF PEACE 4
SANTEE (4-14-21) – The Santana Sultans on the day pounded out fifteen hits and scored seven runs in the first couple of innings to set the tone in their 12-4 win on Wednesday over the OLP Pilots.
Santana (7-2) would strike first in the bottom of the first inning when Joey Barkhimer doubled in Hailey Phillips to make it 1-0, the next batter Natalie Sims would double to center field scoring both Barkhimer and Isabella Cyman to make it 3-0.
Hailey Oceguera would follow with an RBI single and a couple of batters later both Oceguera and Sammi Sullivan scored on an error to give them a 6-0 lead.
Sims in the bottom of the second inning for the Sultans would drive in Madison Jordan to make it 7-0.
The Pilots (2-3) would finally get on the board in the top of the fifth inning as they socked two two-run home runs to pull within 7-4.
But the momentum didn’t last long as the Sultans answered right back with a four-spot of their own. Contributing were Cyman who drove in Taylin Warren, Barkhimer who would single in Gilliane Johnston, and also Anyssa Mazon who scored on a sacrifice.
On the day in the circle for the Sultans, it was a combo effort as Ashtyn Niemic picked up the win in which she went four and two-thirds innings while giving up four runs on four hits and walked four while striking out five, Lainie Brown came in and finished things up working two and a third innings in which she gave up no runs on no hits.
RANCHO BUENA VISTA 14, GROSSMONT 0
VISTA – The home team Rancho Buena Vista Longhorns made it a long day for the visiting Grossmont Foothillers as they scored all their runs in every inning to win a 11-0, shortened five-inning contest on Wednesday.
For Grossmont (3-3), the lone hit on the day came in the top of the first with two outs as Jade Daley laced a single.
Four hitters for the Longhorns (9-1) had multiple hits including Paige Dimmler who drove in three runs and homered, Savannah Coyle who also drove in a pair of runs, Janae Combs, and Faith Steffany.
Sunny Miller for the Hillers took the loss as she tossed an inning in which she gave up four runs on five hits and struck out one, Katelynn Parent tossed three innings in which she gave up ten runs on eleven hits and walked two.
On the other side, Coyle went all five innings to pick up the win in which she allowed the one hit and struck out nine on the day.
SAN DIEGUITO ACADEMY 13, CHRISTIAN 6
EL CAJON– Despite a big day at the plate for Christian’s Allyson Moody (3-3, R, 4 RBI, 2 2B, 3B) in which she drove four runs it wasn’t enough as the San Dieguito Mustangs put up a seven-spot in the fourth and never looked back.
Back-to-back base hits by Kate Manes (3-3, 3R, 2B, 3B) and Rachel Stephens (1-3, 2R) followed by a triple by Moody to bring them both in would give Christian an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Later in the bottom of the third inning, Moody struck again as she doubled in Stephens, also Manes would score on a wild pitch and Dawnelle Mcleod singled in Moody to make it 5-0.
Unfortunately in the top of the fourth inning the Mustangs would take advantage of costly errors by the Patriots along with base hits to push across seven runs and take a 7-5 lead.
“We have major potential to do damage but a lot of our players’ practice time is split between other sports,” Manes said. “Everyone is getting better but since we have had limited practice time together, there are times when we are holding on to the ball, or not throwing to the right location.”
Moving along to the bottom of the seventh inning and trailing 13-5 the Patriots would add on one more run as Moody doubled in Manes to make it 13-6.
“Allyson is one of the strong players on our team,” Manes said. “She is killing it at the plate this year. Because her season got cut short as a freshman, she is taking advantage of every chance she has to make a name for herself. She stays calm and composed in high-pressure situations which leads to her success.”
Both Chloe Hessom and Allison Van Der Zalm would contribute with base hits on the day for the Patriots.
Moody who also was in the circle took the loss as she allowed thirteen runs of which only three were earned in her seven innings of work. She also walked four and fanned thirteen on the day.
“Allyson is doing a great job pitching,” Manes added. “Having been in her position, I know how tough it can be. She has great ability to redeem herself at the plate.”
San Dieguito moves to 2-0; Christian is 0-8.
MATER DEI CATHOLIC 1, PATRICK HENRY 0
CHULA VISTA – On a day where the offense was limited the Mater Dei Crusaders would make the one run scored early on stand up despite being out hit on Wednesday (Apr. 14) by Patrick Henry, 1-0.
Kiyra Moody for the Crusaders would have a hand with the only run scored on the day as she doubled in the bottom of the first inning to score Michaella Salvatierra.
Patrick Henry would threaten in the top of the fourth inning with two outs as Jessica DeWitt doubled to left field. She would be stranded as the next batter would be retired.
Moving on to the top of the sixth inning the Patriots would have their best opportunity of the day to score when Olivia Gigante led off with a double, Alina Hernandez came in to run, the next batter Dezianna Patmon walked to put runners on first and second and no outs.
With one out and runners on first and second McKenna Gieger singled to load the bases but Gisselle Garcia would induce the friendly double-play ground ball to end the inning.
After a leadoff single by Malia Savage in the top of the seventh inning, she would be replaced by Isabella Dean as a runner, Sydney Newton hit into a fielder’s choice in which Dean was thrown out. With one out and Newton on first base Kaiah Altmeyer singled to center field advancing Newton to second base, Jenel Mallari sacrificed both runners over. Even though there were two outs now up stepped Gigante but unfortunately, she would be retired on a fly ball out to end the game.
In the circle for the Patriots (5-2), Gigante took the hard-luck loss as she went all seven innings in which she allowed the one run on five hits while only walking two and striking out seven on the day.
On the other side for the Crusaders (6-0), Garcia matched Gigante pitch for pitch as she allowed no runs on seven hits in her seven innings of work to get the complete-game win. On the day she walked three and struck out seven.
