Hawks close, then not-so-close

FULLERTON – San Diego Christian College came extremely close to winning its first baseball game since Jan. 29. but the long losing streak will extend into the fourth month.

After dropping a doubleheader to Host International on Wednesday (Mar. 30), 14-3 and 9-2, Thursday’s (Mar. 31) twin bill at century-old Amerige Park gave the Hawks great hope only to end in greater misery.

SDCC took the Royals into extra innings in the opener, only to fall, 7-6 in 10 innings. The nightcap was even more depressing as the discourage Hawks suffering a 14-0 blanking.

San Diego Christian (2-29 overall) has now dropped 28 straight ballgames in a season-long trek on the road as City of San Diego officials continue to make Balboa Park’s Morley Park unavailable to both the Hawks and San Diego City College (which canceled its season, along with the rest of the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference).

The extra-inning game was tied three times before the Hawks took the lead in the fifth inning, then scored twice more in the sixth for a 6-4 lead. But when the Royals answered with three in the sixth, the bullpens for both sides took over.

Finally, a wild pitch sent a runner to second base, scoring on a Domenic Donato single to right field.

Disheartened, SDCC fell in the second game on a combined, 2-hit shutout by four Royals pitchers. They struck 14 Hawks in the 7-inning affair.

San Diego Christian has a bye in the Golden State Athletic Conference next week, so will travel to San Marcos to meet host University of Saint Katherine in doubleheaders on Apr. 9-10. Both start at 11 a.m.
