Saturday’s games
VALHALLA 72, EL CAJON VALLEY 40 – Valhalla senior Indiana Schaeffer went off for 20 points against the visiting Braves. He made a pair of treys and made five streals.
Junior Calvert Esho added 14 points and 15 boards, while Joe Avalos contributed 11 points, six rebounds, and four assists for the Norsemen, including three triples from deep.
Sophomore Quaylon Bryant led El Cajon Valley with 15 points. Teammate M.J. Rivera had 10 points.
MOUNT MIGUEL 56, GROSSMONT 54 – The Matadors’ Elijah Black scored 28 points.
Mount Miguel led 20-12 after the first quarter and 30-26 at halftime. Grossmont kept it close throughout the second half, making for a close finish.
SANTANA 59, KEARNY 57 – The Sultans fell behind early but eventually took the lead in the second quarter. The Komets had a 16-12 lead but the Sultans battled back to lead 22-21. Santana eventually built a lead of 41-36 in the second half. Santana reportedly shot 50 percent from the field. It was the Sultans first victory of the season in three starts.
BISHOP’S 69, STEELE CANYON 60 – The Cougars led at halftime, 33-29, but the Knights outscored Steele, 22-5, in the third quarter.
Arthur Simpson had 15 points and eight rebounds for the Cougars, while Angel Raposa added 13 points and three rebounds and senior Joey Cleaves finished with 12 points and four assists. Cam Hunt came home with nine points and five rebounds.
The Cougars will face visiting Olympian on Thursday.
LA JOLLA COUNTY DAY 56, FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 50 – The Torreys outscored the Knights, 21-15, in the fourth quarter.
Senior Derrien Carter-Hollinger had 12 points for the Knights, while teammate Derrius Carter-Hollinger, a sophomore, added 10 points.
Junior Anthony Lambert also finished with 10 points for FCHS. Lambert had three-pointer to close the gap to 48-46 in the fourth.
Nick Hadge had a pair of important field goals late for the Knights to try to keep up with LJCD in the final minutes.
Friday’s games
WEST HILLS 67, LIBERTY 59 – Ashton Avestro scored 21 points, including three three-pointers in the fourth quarter, and Kyle Dobyns added 20 points to lead the Wolf Pack over the Lions for their four-straight win to open the season
“Dobyns played the best defensive game of his career,” West Hills coach Tim Hudson said.
Dobyns added 10 rebounds.
Brendan Greene added 12 points for the Wolf Pack.
Cash Creighton was money with the dimes, handing out nine assists for the Pack.
Luke Gibson had nine points and six rebounds for West Hills.
Sebastian Vaughn stepped in and added four points and four boards for WHHS.
The Wolf Pack knocked off the Lions despite a 29-point effort from Liberty senior Jonah Belprez.
STEELE CANYON 77, MONTE VISTA 74 – The Cougars knocked off the Monarchs in a Grossmont Conference matchup.
Steele Canyon led 51-40 at halftime in a high-tempo game. But things slowed down in the second half and the Monarchs steadily closed the gap.
Steele Canyon’s Cam Hunt had 14 points and seven rebounds.
Angel Raposa had 14 points and five assists for the Cougars.
Cougar Alex Pabon added 12 points and six rebounds.
Alex Jenkins finished with 12 points, and five rebounds for SCHS.
Steele junior Arthur Simpson had 10 points and three assists.
Brandon Tully had 30 points and seven rebounds for Monte Vista.
Armondo Resing added 12 for the Monarchs.
GRANITE HILLS 57, SANTANA 51 – The Granite Hills boys varsity basketball team had an eagle-eye from downtown Friday night against visiting Santana in a 57-51 victory.
Several Granite Hills Eagles made three-pointers to help lift the team to the win over the Sultans.
The hit parade started in the first half and included a buzzer-beating field goal by Granite at the end of the second quarter.
The Eagles knocked down a few more in the second half.
HELIX 59, EL CAPITAN 36 – The Highlanders defeated the visiting Vaqueros on Friday night in a Grossmont Conference game.
Thursday’s game
GROSSMONT 74, MONTE VISTA 53 – The Foohillers used a 20-8 first-quarter edge to take control at home in a Grossmont Conference matchup.
Brandon Tully led Monte Vista with 27 points. He had three three-pointers in the second half and finished with six rebounds and five steals for the game.
