Five Matadors make century mark

SPRING VALLEY – The Mount Miguel Lady Matadors cracked the century mark on Monday, smashing the Morse Tigers, 103-21.

Sophomore Jennifer Moreno scored 43 points to lead her team to the commanding victory.

It wasn’t like the Matadors had a bench to go to in order to change the flow of play.

The team – with currently just five members – really was just working on fundamentals, not even necessarily scoring.

“We knew we have to work on playing defense and communicating,” Moreno said. “Playing EBO has helped me improve, to keep disciplined and have a good mentality.”

Sophomore Ixchel Rojo led the rest of the scoring with 20 points.

Not to be outdone was sophomore Zanna Hurst, and junior 6-footer Danay Williams-Pope, who both scored 18 points.

“All the teams are a little rusty after coming out and competing together after being out a year,” Hurst said. “Everyone has been playing, and we played this weekend, but when we started to get out on transition is what a real game felt like again.”

Williams-Pope also added 19 rebounds and three blocked shots.

“I don’t mind being where I am at as a rebounder,” Williams-Pope said. “I like helping my team. I know coach (Robbie Sandoval) is going to get my best play out of me.”

Hurst and Moreno both knocked down four three-point field goals.

The Matadors are hopeful to add two transfers soon.

EL CAPITAN 79, MOUNT MIGUEL 39 – The Knights won the game against the Lady Vaqueros, who were led by Emma Driskill’s career-high 22 points.
