Royals deal Hawks 10th-straight loss

2021 SAN DIEGO CHRISTIAN HAWKS SOFTBALL
ECS staff report
FULLERTON – Entering the most difficult portion of the schedule, the San Diego Christian College women’s softball team thought they could at least make a dent in a 10-game slate against nationally-ranked and upper-division competition.
The improving Hawks proved they could hang, but they expected to win at a couple of games. Instead, the squad returns home on a 10-game losing streak after 14th-ranked Hope International swept a pair of Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheaders.
While the SDCC pitching and defense were solid, the pitching of the Royals silenced the Hawks bats in posting shutouts in each of the four games, held at Bastanchury Park.
On Friday (Mar. 19), HIU secured wins of 1-0 and 9-0, then came back Saturday (Mar. 20) for decisions of 2-0 and 5-0.
Indeed, if you can’t score, you can’t win.
The only contest which looked lop-sided was actually a 1-0 ballgame entering the sixth inning. However, the Royals posted eight runs in the home-half of the frame, capped by a 3-run, walk-off homer by Nicole Wise.
Among the Hawks, clean-up hitter Alicia Corona was one of the few Hawks to solve Royals pitching. The second baseman posted base hits in each of the first three games.
Meanwhile, leadoff hitter Hannah Springs, the first baseman, registered hits in both of Friday’s contests.
Thus, Hope International (17-1 overall, 8-0 GSAC) assumed full control of the West Division standings while SDCC (7-13, 0-8) looks forward to a slate of games not against the NAIA elite.
Saturday
William Jessup 13-6, San Diego Christian 2-1
The Hawks losing streak was extended to 13 straight after the Warriors captured both games of Saturday’s (Mar. 27) doubleheader to complete a 3-game series sweep.
William Jessup 13-6, San Diego Christian 2-1
The Hawks losing streak was extended to 13 straight after the Warriors captured both games of Saturday’s (Mar. 27) doubleheader to complete a 3-game series sweep.
In the opener, Jessup tallied eight times in the fourth inning, then added two more in the fifth to initiate the run rule.
The second game saw the Hawks allow eight walks and commit four errors to fall behind early.
The lone batting highlights for SDCC saw second baseman Alicia Corona gain half of the host’s four hits in the opener. Game 2 saw right fielder Erika SIlva post half the ballclub’s six hits in her best outing of the season.
Silva is now second on the Hawks in batting, averaging .350. Hannah Springs tops the table at .396 and co-leads in home runs.
