Curtis passes 2,000 career points in win

LAKESIDE – Mackenzie Curtis, the El Capitan High senior, hit the 2,000 career point mark on Saturday in the delayed season-opener as she paced the Vaqueros with a game-best 27 points, including 20 in the first half to help the hosts mount a double-digit advantage en route to a 48-31 verdict over visiting Liberty Charter of Lemon Grove at historic Foster Gym.
The El Capitan Vaqueros displayed a little bit of offense in the first half, then the defense dictated the second half.
In addition, senior post player Emma Driskill collected nine of her 11 points in the opening two quarters.
In the second half, it was all about El Capitan’s defense. The Vaqueros did not allow the Lions to score a bucket until there were just four minutes remaining in the contest. The visitors earned just a single free throw made in the third stanza and just 11 total points after the intermission.
Kaylee Cole had a basket in the first to make it 10-2 El Capitan, as the Vaqueros started their early run.
Curtis now has 2,006 points, matching Vaqueros legend Stephanie Kindreich (1994-97) for third place on the Grossmont Conference career list.
The all-time leaders are Allison Duffey of El Cap and Santana’s Jordan Franey, who both finished the 2005-06 season with 2,190 points.
For the Lions (0-1), the leading scorers were Kellan Hayden (8 points) and Olivia Doss (7). Both are freshmen.
The teams will meet again on Monday at 6:30 p.m.at the Lemon Grove Recreation Center.
Elsewhere, visiting Coronado squeaked past West Hills, 51-48, in the COVID-19 delayed, the season opener for both schools.

At Caledonia Gymnasium in La Mesa, the host Highlanders commenced a new era with first-year head coach Jason Cavazos by downing the Braves.
Despite the setback, the future looks bright for El Cajon Valley. Among the Braves’ top three scorers — Mujahid Rivera (9 points), Quaylon Bryant (8 points) and Daniel Duarte (7 points) — are all sophomores.
Helix worked for a 13-7 lead after one quarter but the Scotties (1-0) led 33-13 at halftime and 54-24 at the end of the third quarter.
