LA MESA – The third-ranked Helix Highlanders returned the favor to the Eastlake Titans on Monday, handing the county’s top-ranked team a 3-0 loss.

Helix senior Thomas Caneday went six innings, allowing two hits while striking out five to earn the victory.

“Eastlake is a top team and today’s game shows what we’re capable of,” Caneday said. “Each pitch was on today, and each batter was given different sequencing. Today’s game was a pitching duel and our hitters got hot in the sixth. We’re looking forward to the rest of the season. We have a really strong team again this year and our coaching is great so I think we could definitely end up in the CIF championship this year.”

Senior Jordan Thompson earned the save with a pair of strikeouts in a perfect seventh.

“Thomas pitched amazing and he really set the tone for everyone,” Thompson said. “When we went ahead in the bottom of the six so I knew I was going out to close in the seventh. I really just tried to follow up on what Thomas had done for the first six innings and put up another zero to win the game.

“Going up by three runs made it easy for me to not worry about giving up hits or runs so it allowed me to be really confident throwing my fastball. This was a great all-around team win and I’m so excited to see what this team will do as the season goes on.”

Helix scored when Demetrius Wells singled home the game’s first run with two out.

Sophomore David Blome singled to center to make it 2-0.

Ayden Estrada drove home the third run with a single.

“We played well, happy for our kids,” Helix head coach Cole Holland said. “Tommy threw well and we got some big hits late. Proud of our effort.”
