CHULA VISTA — Helix High won its first boys soccer championship in 36 years after defeating Grossmont Conference foe West Hills, 3-1, for the San Diego CIF Division II title on Saturday night at Hilltop High.
Helix improved to 13-3-4.
Danny Nunez scored two goals, including the first of the game in the sixth minute.
Then in the second half, Dylan Hambrick scored for Helix on a penalty kick with 14 minutes left in the game.
But West Hills (15-4-7) answered with a goal by Trevor Clark with nine minutes to go.
Nunez closed out the scoring.
It was the fourth meeting of the season between the two teams, but the Scotties’ first win.
Two of the matchups were scoreless ties with West Hills winning, 3-2, at Helix on Feb. 6.
The teams shared the league championship with a 5-1-2 record.
Helix, winners of three straight, will host the Norwalk Lancers (16-5-1) in the Southern California Regional playoffs on Tuesday at 4.
The Highlanders were left off the final local media poll despite a computer ranking of third in the section, behind only top-ranked Torrey Pines, and third-ranked Cathedral Catholic.
The winner of the state playoff meeting goes on in the Division III SoCal Regional Playoffs to race Garces Rams, who have a first-round bye. Game time is tentative for 4 p.m. on Thursday at Sam Tobias Field in Kern County.
