Cougars, Madison go 11 scoreless innings

SAN DIEGO – Steele Canyon and 13th-ranked Madison played four extra innings before running out of daylight game in a game that was called in a 0-0 tie after 11 innings

Madison could not score against Steele Canyon pitchers Sebastian Granados and Gabriel Diaz.

Granados had five strikeouts in five innings of work. He allowed three hits.

Diaz, a left-handed sophomore, spun six shutout innings, striking out five.

Steele Canyon had four hits but left nine men on base.

The Cougars turned a live drive out into a 4-6-3 triple play. Steele also had a double play that was scored 8-6-5.

Jalen Smith had a double for the Cougars.

“Crazy game today,” Steele Canyon head coach Jesse Evans said. “Neither team could get the big hit. Both teams worked out of multiple jams. Awesome pitching and defense on both sides. We had a play at the plate we thought we beat safe for the only run of the game but didn’t get the call.”

HELIX 13, CORONADO 0 – Alonzo Richardson homered and drove in four runs, while teammate Noah Lane had three hits and three RBI to lead the Highlanders in their season-opener against visiting Coronado.

Thomas Caneday went 5 innings, allowing four hits and hits striking out four for the Highlanders.

“The guys played really well today,” Caneday said. “There are always some things we can improve on as a team, but it’s all been coming together as we expected. If we keep things on track, I think we definitely have a chance at doing some big things this year

Jordan Thompson and James Whitman both drove in a pair of runs.

“It’s always great to shut a team out especially in a home opener,” Thompson said. “We had a great game. Zo hitting the home run was obviously huge but I think everyone 1-through-9 did their part today whether it was getting a hit with runners in scoring position, having a team at-bat and walking, or battling with two strikes and putting the ball in play.”

Richardson’s home run – a three-run shot – came in the fifth inning.

Aaron Pulido pitched an inning and Adrien Reveles also went one frame for Helix.

GROSSMONT 2, OTAY RANCH 1 – Grossmont senior Trey Concepcion had two hits and scored a run for Grossmont in the season-opener.

Senior Gio Giganti drove in the key run for the Foothillers.

“I was behind in the count and saw a breaking ball up,” Giganti said. “I put a good swing on the ball and it found a gap. I was glad I was able to help my team get that go-ahead run in.”

Sophomore Jake Romero went 5 2/3 innings for Grossmont, allowing three hits while striking out eight.

Junior Evan Vasilou closed the game out for the Hillers with 1 1/3 innings, recording two punchouts.

Grossmont picked up a run in the fourth and another in the fifth for a 2-0 lead.

MONTE VISTA 3, SAN YSIDRO 2 – Monte Vista junior Andy Canedo hit a solo home run for the Monarchs, while junior Abraham Sanchez pitched a complete game, striking out eight for the opening-game win.

Monte Vista scored twice in the first inning. The Monarchs added a run in the top of the sixth to extend a 2-1 lead. Junior Jacob Savoy had a triple for the Monarchs.

MATER DEI CATHOLIC 5, VALHALLA 3 – At the Foothiller-Aztec Tournament, Valhalla’s Collin Scribner and Kyle Casper drove in runs with two out to give the Norsemen a 2-0 lead.

Mario Johnson stole home to give Valhalla a 3-2 lead.

EASTLAKE 9, WEST HILLS 1 – The top-ranked Titans won the matchup against the Wolf Pack on Monday afternoon.

Kyle Dobyns pitched a scoreless inning for West Hills.
